Can you imagine liberating up to 100 gigawatts of capacity in the US grids over the next three to five years, without laying new power lines? 🤔 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) believes it's possible with AI and other grid enhancements, and this Economist's recent article explores some of them in detail. 💡 The core idea behind the featured software innovations is to enhance either the 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱-𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. For one, some AI platforms help consumers shift their energy usage to cheaper and more abundant times, reducing peak demand and the need for new capacity. Other solutions – like the one from yours truly – help grid operators make their grids smarter. envelio's IGP, for example, creates detailed digital twins of power grids, giving you more visibility and control over your entire energy system. This, in turn, enables more flexible and efficient management of energy generation and consumption. Thank you The Economist for including envelio in your overview of these exciting grid-enhancing technologies! 🙌⚡ Read the entire article here (it's behind a log-in but the registration is free): https://lnkd.in/eMsg5HWs #gridmodernization #smartgrids #gridofthefuture #envelio #gridtransition

🇺🇸 Last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced a new "make-it-or-be-gone" rule for coal-fired power plants as part of the nation's commitment to reduce carbon pollution. Under this new rule, coal-fired 🪨 electric plants that plan to operate beyond 2039 would be forced to cut or capture 90 percent of their CO2 emissions – or they'll have to shut down. It's important to note that carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are already available to the industry. EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan highlighted that: “Multiple power companies have indicated that [CCS] is a viable technology for the power sector today, and they are currently pursuing those CCS projects". This bold, yet necessary move aims to curb planet-warming emissions from the US power sector. And with renewable energy sources on the rise, the timing for it is just about right. ⏱️ In 2023, nuclear energy and renewables provided about 41% of US electricity, significantly overshadowing coal's 16% share, with the rest generated from natural gas. Just to compare, in 2021 and 2022, coal provided 23% and 20% of electricity respectively, while the share of renewables had a year-to-year increase. 🌱 As we witness this transition, the role of digital grid solutions to support the growth of renewables becomes increasingly significant. Particularly, considering that around 1200GW of solar and wind capacity is still waiting to be connected to the US grid. The path forward is clear: prioritizing rapid and efficient US grid modernization is key to integrating renewable resources at scale. 🚀 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gAYa_kAT #gridmodernization #renewableenergy #gridintegration #greenenergy #energytransition

🧠 Did you already know that... ...in 2023, clean energy added an economy the size of the Czech Republic to the global GDP? Yup, that's right. As clean energy becomes more integral to the global energy system, a new economy centered around it is emerging — and it promises to become big. The recent analysis by Laura Cozzi, Timur Gül, Thomas Spencer and Peter Levi at the IEA found that clean energy added around USD 320 billion to the world economy. This is about 10% of global GDP, or as stated above, the amount equivalent to the economy of the Czech Republic. The analysis focused on: • Manufacturing of clean energy technologies, • Deployment of clean power capacity, • Clean equipment sales (e.g. EVs and heat pumps) Interestingly, in the EU, clean energy had the largest share in terms of GDP growth of all regions assessed: A whopping one-third of the total growth. 💪 💡 Most notably, the energy clean sector provided in 2023 36 million jobs, with employment in clean energy jobs exceeding that of fossil fuels by over 10%. This assessment by International Energy Agency (IEA) is a strong testament to our commitment to a cleaner future. With millions of jobs already created and billions added to the global economy, the momentum is undeniable. Let's keep pushing the boundaries and make clean energy the cornerstone of our economic future. 🚀 Find the link to the full article here: https://lnkd.in/edMSMe5f #cleanenergy #energytransition #cleanenergyeconomy #cleanenergyfuture
