"bortreist" indicates that you've travelled somewhere (on holiday, business trip or similar).
"borte" therefore implies the oppositely, namely that you're away for some other reason (usually not as far away, not for as long, and not in as planned a manner). You could be on a lunch or bathroom break, in a meeting or having a sick day or suchlike.
"borte" is more general and the best bet if you're unsure of which to go for, though "bortreist" tends to sound more natural (or perhaps that's just me — and you certaintly can't and shouldn't avoid using "borte" every time).
