Anordnen would be to arrange something like cutlery on a table
Ordnen is to put something in order f.e. A-Z
And zuordnen means to match something, like for example Curry -> India, Lions -> Africa etc.

@greatunknown sorry to bother you again: 1- what about einordnen? 2- is anordnen commonly used to say to order in the sense of to command? thanks again.

- German
The ein in einordnen means "in/into" as in Eingang so it's the process of putting something into the group/order
Einordnen is literally it entering the order and ordnen is the arranging/putting in order of already gathered things.
Ich habe meine CD eingeordnet -> Ich ordne meine CDs
Anordnen means to order a command. It's commonly used in a military-like sense.
Ich habe das Räumen des Gebietes angeordnet
(I ordered the clearing of the area)

@greatunknown: last question and I leave you in peace. In a book on the history of the discovery of bacteria and the ancestors of the microscope, I read: ..., dass man durch zwei angeordnete Linsen Objekte vergrößert betrachten könne'. Why angeordnete instead of one on top of the other aufeinandergelegt ? And why betrachten and not beobachten?
- English (US)
- German
Well the implication is that the lenses are arranged at a specific distance. Aufeinander would mostly mean making contact. Simply stacking it doesn't work so well.
Betrachten and beobachten have only barely any difference, atleast from what I know. There might be a very pendantic and minute difference.

@greatunknown: I woke up last night with an idea.
anordnen means to arrange according to a plan, and ordnen means to arrange according to a rule. Does this make sense? Thank you
