wow you got to the point where even I as a German had to look it up. Answer: both works
Why? Dativ and Akkusativ.
The Dativ is the answer for the question "where does it knock?
The Akkusativ is the answer for the question "against what does it knock?"
If we take the words:
Das Haus
Der Baum
Die Tür
and we ask the question:
wo klopft es? (where does it knock?)
The answer is:
an dem Haus
an dem Baum
an DER Tür
If we ask the question wogegen wird geklopf
The answer is:
an das Haus
an den Baum
an DIE Tür
So one sentence uses the Genitiv, the other one the Akkusativ.
If you ask a German which one works. They will say A, B or both without knowing the reason why.

Because a german speaker would understand exactly what you mean. In this sentence it would not matter if u use the first or the second one. Sorry I dont know how to explain it grammatically but both is ok.

@derPerez Its funny but as a native speaker here there are a lot of things i learn that I never thought about. And I can more and more imagine that german must be a hell of a language to learn.

@Shengsi Ja, die deutsche Sprache kann allerdings verwirrend sein, aber das macht die Sprache sehr sehr toll für mich und ich liebe sie. Einmal habe ich mit einem Deutschen gesprochen und ich sagte ihm, dass man "an" in Orten benutzt, die vertikal sind, und dann ist ihm das aufgefallen

@daninerv I see, I was learning more towards it being Akkusativ because on what are you knocking? You're knocking on the door. I thought since the action was being acted upon the door, it'd be Akkusativ. And then if you wanted to make it Dativ, then you'd change the sentence as: "Ich bin an der Tür" because nothing is happening, you're just standing there. Aber jetzt verstehe ich besser.
