Founded by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi as a design network between Milan, London and Mumbai, OBR explores new modes of contemporary living, developing an architecture that responds sensitively to and stimulates interaction with its environment, while adapting to the changing needs of society. OBR’s work strives to promote a sense of community while enhancing individual identities. In this book, the architects present their work as a communal endeavor. They engage influen-

tial people in transdisciplinary dialogues that extend beyond architecture itself, questioning its autonomy and offering new perspectives on its potential and relevance. The monograph showcases a selection of twenty-four international projects by OBR that address key social issues through the medium of architecture. As an architect, urban planner and sculptor, Rob Krier has created a multifaceted oeuvre which is presented here in a comprehensive manner for the first time. He worked with O. M. Ungers and Frei Otto before setting up his own studios in Vienna and Berlin. He l ater taught at the Vienna University of Technology and as a visiting professor at Yale University. Drawing on a wealth of historical models and archetypal patterns, he developed new typologies of streets and public squares as an architect and urban planner, and was respon-

Karl Schwanzer was on fire for architecture. He reformed Austrian architecture after 1945 and, in the post-war period, significantly shaped the image of a new, free Austria at home and abroad. As an importer and exporter of ideas, he worked on over 600 projects and designs over 28 years of his career. This book is an illustrated chronology of his oeuvre, bringing to life developments and modulations. At the same time, it is also an architectural and contemporary history

Donald Judd was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser known aspects of his work are numerous architectural drawings in which he explores the relationship between architecture and art. One particular location was of great significance to Judd’s architectural work: Fort Russell, an abandoned US military base in the desert near the town of Marfa, Texas. Judd bought parts of the base and systematically converted this space into one of the largest ensemble collections of contemporary art in the world.

The long awaited fifth volume of Herzog & de Meuron. The Complete Works introduces the sixty projects from the years 2002 to 2004 with characteristic meticulousness. These include buildings that have already become architectural icons of the present, like the Olympic Stadium in Beijing and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; but also projects, which, although they remain unrealized, have influenced the architectural discourse, like the residential tower for the Hotel Schatzalp over Davos, which gave fresh stimulus for building in the Alps. In the period covered by this volume, urban planing was a major focus of Herzog & de Meuron’s work. The architectural boom in China gave birth to plans for entire urban districts. Masterplans for Jerez de la Frontera and the Olympic Games in London also opened up entire urban regions to future development. Gerhard Mack Editor for art, architecture, and design NZZ am Sonntag

associated with a Philharmonic Hall to be combined with the intimacy generated by the steepness of such popular places. And finally, there is the idea of the marquee or festival tent. As in Bayreuth or in Greek theaters, we introduced awnings as an overall roof to exploit the advantages of modifiable event architecture. The roof was not to consist of vaulting or a dome, as in a church, nor would there be modern acoustic panels as in a theater or a community hall, but rather a free-hanging organic form, as sumptuous as a large chandelier or a canopy.

Building Sharjah reveals how modern architecture unfurled across the United Arab Emirates’ third-largest city. An oil discovery in 1972 positioned Sharjah as one of the world’s final cities shaped by transformative fortune. In the footsteps of Kuwait, Riyadh, and Dubai, Sharjah faced a metamorphosis: either one that repeated the past’s mistakes or one that reimagined how wealth can build a city. For several decades, 20th century architecture thrived in Cuba and a wealth of buildings was realized prior to the revolution in 1959 and in its wake. The designs comprise luxurious nightclubs and stylish hotels, sports facilities and elegant private homes, both on the island and abroad. Drawing on the vernacular, their architects defined a way to be modern and Cuban at the same time – creating an architecture oscillating between tradition and avantgarde.

ARCHITECTURE    CONSTRUCTION | MATERIALS

People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out,

Expressing ideas in the form of drawings and models is usually required in the early stages of studying: “learning by doing” is the only way for students to quickly develop a repertoire for their design work. However, there are important issues to consider between the phases of devising the spatial concept and recreating it in a two- or three-dimensional drawing or physical model: How to construct a perspective freehand drawing? What plan drawings are necessary to present

my design? What scale should my model be and what materials should I use to construct it? Basics Architectural Presentation combines the highly successful single volumes Technical Drawing, Freehand Drawing, CAD, Modelbuilding (new edition) and Architectural Photography from the series BASICS in a new volume.

Residential Buildings are normally the first design projects encountered by the student in his or her training. The focus at this point is on the different conceptual possibilities that allow one to take the first step toward an actual idea. Topics: • concepts and kinds of cohabitation and dwelling • residential functions • the creation of living space • design in housing construction This book is intended to help readers to find an easy way into the complex subject of hous-

ing design, explaining fundamental concepts, the way the individual living areas can cohere, and building form variations. The aim is to understand approaches to making rooms, living areas and entire residential units fit together, and to be able to use this knowledge to develop one’s own housing construction design work competently and prudently. Structures of Displacement documents a joint project of the [applied] Foreign Affairs lab of the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The project involved the conception and design of an agricultural training center at Harsham Camp, a refugee camp in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (2016–2019). This book presents [a]FA’s mapping of the Harsham Camp to identify and describe its economic networks and habitats, and provides insights into the individual biographies of the camp’s residents.

What was it like to grow up in a Modernist residence? Did these radical environments shape the way that children looked at architecture later in life? The oral history in this book paints a uniquely intimate portrait of Modernism. The authors conducted interviews with people, who spent their childhood in radical Modernist domestic spaces, uncovering both serene and poignant memories. The recollections range from the ambivalence of philosopher Ernst Tugendhat, now 90 years old, who

lived in the famous Mies van der Rohe house in Brno (1930) to the fond reminiscing of the youngest daughter of the Schminke family, who still dreams of her Scharoun-designed ship-like villa in Löbau (1933). The book offers a unique, private and often refreshing perspective on these icons of the avant-garde. Julia Jamrozik, Coryn Kempster University at Buffalo, the State University of New York

The architecture of the interwar period is still often described solely with terms such as classical modernism, Neues Bauen, or the International Style. But, for some time, there have also been calls to expand the perspective and to consider modernism in a more d ifferentiated way. The 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus provides an occasion to take a critical look at the architecture of modernism and to discuss the concept of multiple modernisms. The texts describe the Bauhaus between selfpresentation and perception from an external

perspective, the conflicts between the representatives of radical and moderate modernism, the writing of the history of architecture in the twentieth century, and the role of national and regional modernism in the development of national identities after the First World War.

How the relationships between education and spatiality develop historically is demonstrated in an incisive way by the decades that followed the “Sputnik crisis” of 1957. The Soviet space program triggered a transformation of the global landscape of learning. The construction of hundreds of new schools and universities was initiated amid a Cold War atmosphere ranging from the optimism of reform to accounts of a „world educational crisis.“ At the same time, traditional pedagogical concepts were called into question – including a demand to do away

with institutions of education. What is manifest in the architectures of learning in the 1960s and 1970s is a politics of space that is informed by the education shock that so shook up societies globally, while they were gradually being transformed to become what we today call knowledge societies. Within the architectural design, planning, and construction processes, new valuations and revaluations are constantly taking place. Every decision is made based on existing reference values, even if the respective action is f uture-oriented and geared towards the creation of the new. At the same time, the preservation or further development of b uilding structures is based on traditional thought patterns and continuously internalized value systems. This means that values are never static, even in building, but are subject to a process. This

interdisciplinary volume focuses on processes of value appropriation, value internalization, and value formation. These processes are illustrated using selected examples from the history of building and planning from modern times to the present.

In the first decades of the 20th century, civil engineers were widely seen as a role model for future architects. Their role within the contemporary architecture movements, however, was hardly discussed. To this day, even fundamental questions about collaborations, rivalries, or conflicts between the two sister disciplines still await answers. This volume brings together contributions by international scholars on the c ooperation between architects and civil engineers in

various countries in the interwar p eriod. By offering both insights into national peculiarities and new reflections on the general n ature, character, and significance of such joint efforts, it opens exciting new perspectives on the modern building culture of Europe and b eyond. In 1950, the obligatory participation of visual artists in state building measures at home and abroad was decreed in the German Bundestag as well as in the parliament of the GDR. Over a period of 70 years, numerous artworks that reflect the politics, society, and architecture as well as the tasks of institutions have been created. The book sheds light on the significance and potentials of building-related art for state authorities and institutions, research institutes, military facilities,

Reinforced concrete is the go-to powerhouse of modern construction: no other load-bearing building material is as malleable with similarly good noise and fire protection properties. The book illustrates this versatility with around 20 building examples and specialist articles from the fields of structural and civil engineering. In-depth project descriptions and numerous detailed drawings show the design and construction process of these halls, bridges, railway stations, and office buildings. Articles informed by research and practice

also portray a building material in transformation. Still, the reinforced concrete buildings of earlier decades also constitute a legacy, and their restoration and maintenance continue to fascinate us to this day. The book also takes a critical look at the handling of this building material.

The presented residential projects in Vienna originated from a desire to develop living concepts that strengthen the sense of community and contribute to a society based on solidarity – building groups and participative projects, neighbourhood homes, temporary or permanent social forms of living and working for marginalised groups such as the homeless. Private homes can be downsized if there are more communal spaces. This reduces the need for land and property and gives the community room for leisure and other opportunities. Ulrike Schartner and Alexander Hagner from gaupenraub+/− explain the starting point

and strategies of their work. Robert Temel and Isabella Marboe present the development of communal forms of building and living based on important precursors and trends. Isabella Marboe architect, architecture journalist with architektur.aktuell

Not at Your Service. Manifestos for Design brings together the broad spectrum of beliefs, subjects and practices of designers at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK). It offers different approaches and insights on the present-day role and impact of design. It is not conceived as a finished project, but as a fluid document of its time. Collaborative design, interaction within complex systems, attention economics, the ecological shift, visual literacy, gender-neutral design, “quick and dirty” design ethnography, social

responsibility, the value of ugliness, death futures, immersive technologies, identity and crises, design as a transformative discipline – all of these topics are presented for debate with passion, conviction and professional expertise. The Filming, Researching, Annotating is an introduction to a new type of software and publication based on annotated videos. Practitioners and researchers who work with motion data, for example in the fields of performative art, film, behavioral research or sports science, are supported in their work process and have the opportunity to publish content via video that a printed book cannot convey. The handbook not only presents the findings of the Research Video project at Zurich University of the

Arts (ZHDK), but also offers a manual for using the software tool. Low-threshold “hands-on” access and the absence of a theoretical superstructure allow users to quickly become familiar with and use the software tool. Gunter Lösel theatre studies scholar, ZHDK Prof. Dr. Martin Zimper Head of Cast/Audiovisual Media – Department of Design, ZHDK

Dementia is a term that encompasses a wide range of symptoms. In Europe alone about 10 million people live with dementia. Where health policy and medical approaches reach their limits, art and design strategies can open up new perspectives for people living with dementia – in terms of their abilities and circumstances and their social environment. This interdisciplinary handbook is aimed at people working and researching in the field of dementia. It offers insights into the possibili-

ties and limitations of artistic and art-related interventions in relation to dementia. This publication brings together contributions from the disciplines of design, architecture, and art, music, and museum education, p roviding a variety of insights into this multifaceted syndrome. “Inframince”, a term coined by Marcel Duchamp, refers to ephemeral, ultra-thin, and undecidable phenomena – such as the warmth that remains on a chair after a person gets up. In this book, “inframince” is taken to signify forms of transdisciplinarity in contemporary art. Authors and visual artists capture in text and image fleeting moments in which artistic, theoretical, scientific, or everyday cultural elements meet, change, or merge with one another.

37

Numerous examples of artistic and teaching practice within the discipline of TransArts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna vividly reveal how these manifold transgressions can be rendered productive. Oskar Kokoschka earned his place in the canon of modernist resistance as the wild child of Viennese modernism; a versatile master of image and word, the progenitor of a much-imitated doll fetish, and an anti-fascist defamed by the Nazis as “degenerate”. In short, he was the epitome of the radical, political artist. Kokoschka revisited: This publication is the outcome of an international conference held at the Oskar Kokoschka Center at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. It brings together contemporary research from the fields of art, cultural studies, contemporary history, literature

and theater studies, gender studies, and biography studies. Based on recently discovered sources, it sheds new light on the life and work of this fascinating artist, and critically interrogates many of his most powerful narratives. DECEMBER 2020

The past is not over – it can be rediscovered and explored in archives, and even revived. One such revival – in several acts – is that of the legendary Cabaret Fledermaus (1907–1913) in Vienna, once a locus of emancipatory and escapist tendencies as well as pioneering artistic design. As part of an international cooperative project, the Department of Collection and Archive of the University of Applied Arts Vienna constructed a faithful replica of the famous bar of this cabaret in 2019, and in 2020 the artists’

collective Bar du Bois developed an exhibition entitled unter flaschen. Die Fledermaus in der Bar du Bois [among bottles. The Fledermaus at the Bar du Bois]. This publication documents both the rediscovery of a legendary site of Viennese modernism and its current twofold “resurrection”. The book critically examines the Works for Sale series by the Austrian conceptual artist Kurt Ryslavy, which may be regarded as the magnum opus of his nearly forty years of artistic practice. Works for Sale are immaterial sculptures. The central concept is the idea of buying or selling the work of another artist under the title Work for Sale and under Ryslavy’s name. First shown in Ghent in 1992, the Works for Sale were later included in Kasper König’s Skulptur Projekte Münster in 1997. They

ttracted international attention but were neva er sold in an i nstitutional context. The documentation, certificates, and packaging that accompany the Works for Sale are merely material accessories, reflecting a failure to understand the intangible nature of the work. Kurt Ryslavy was born in Austria and has lived in Brussels since 1987. He is a conceptual artist, art collector, and wine dealer.
