Als Statue kennt man Lenin (fast) ausschließlich mit staatsmännischer Pose und ernster Miene – der heroische Gründer des ersten sozialistischen Staats der Welt. Aber in Gera steht eine ganz andere Darstellung Lenins: In einer schattigen Ecke des Hintergartens des historischen Hofguts Untermhaus sitzt er mit einer sehr menschlichen, alltäglichen Körperhaltung und einem nachdenklichen Gesichtsausdruck. Hier wird nicht der vermeintliche Held, sondern ein Denker präsentiert.

Die für ihn gestrickte rote Socke ergänzt diese Einzigartigkeit und vollendet eine Figur, die sich von den herkömmlichen Bildnissen ganz klar abhebt und eher eine existenzialistische Aura ausstrahlt. Ob es bei der Socke tatsächlich darum geht, hohe Kunst zu gestalten, ist allerdings fraglich. Das von Mitgliedern der Kabarettistengruppe gestrickte Kleidungsstück könnte eine satirische Anspielung auf den abwertenden Ausdruck „Rote Socke“ sein, mit dem man schon in den 60er Jahren und auch noch im Wahlkampf 1994 linksorientierte Politiker  verhöhnen wollte.

Die Skulptur des deutschen Bildhauers Gerhard Thieme war am 15. April 1971 auf dem Leninplatz an der zentralen Friedrich-Engels-Straße in Gera enthüllt worden. Nach der Wende verschwand sie, um schließlich viele Jahre später plötzlich wieder aufzutauchen, diesmal allerdings im peripherischen Hofgut. Diese stark herabgekommene Anlage wurde anlässlich der Bundesgartenschau 2007 saniert und dient seitdem als kultureller Gasthof, wo das Kabarett „Fettnäppchen“ seine Sommerspielstätte von April bis Oktober hat und auch andere kulturelle Veranstaltungen, wie Jazzfestivals, Konzerte oder Weihnachtsmärkte, stattfinden.

In diesem Kontext hielten es die Organisatoren für angemessen auch die alte Statue Lenins wieder aufzustellen, nicht etwa als politisches Statement, sondern als „beachtenswertes künstlerisches Werk in einem von Kultur und Kunst und nicht von einem ideologischen Machtanspruch geprägten Umfeld im Hofgut.” Und so sitzt der grübelnde Lenin jetzt in dieser dunklen Ecke des Innenhofs und lauscht, wie das Wasser der Weißen Elster hinter dem Hauptgebäude vorbeifließt.

The contemplative Lenin of Gera
In the form of a statue, Lenin is known almost exclusively in a heroic pose and with a serious look – the great founder of the first socialist state in the world. But in Gera we can find something completely different: In a shady corner in the backyard of the historical court complex in the district of Untermhaus, Lenin is sitting with a very human, quotidian posture and a thoughtful expression. It’s not a big hero, who is represented, but rather a thinker. And the knitted red sock on his left foot definitely completes the uniqueness of this figure, which seems more an existential piece of art than an image of a politic revolutionary. But it’s doubtful that the red sock actually intended to complete this piece of art. It’s rather probable, that this little piece of clothing knitted by the members of a cabaret group, which plays here in the summer season, is a satirical allusion to the pejorative expression „red sock„, used in the past to ridicule left orientated politicians.

Since its solemn inauguration on the 15. April 1971 the sculpture of the sculptor Gerhard Thieme had been standing in the central Friedrich-Engels-Straße in Gera. After the German reunification it disappeared, but many years later it suddenly appeared in this rather peripheral location. This historical site was renovated for a big gardening exhibition in 2007 and since then it has become a cultural guesthouse, which is the playhouse for the local cabaret group from April to October and where all kinds of artistic events take place, from concerts to jazz festivals or Christmas markets.

In this context the organizers thought it could be interesting to show the old statue of Lenin, not as a political statement, but – in the words of one of the supervisors of the project – as a piece of art from a particular culture and from an artistic background. And that’s how the contemplative Lenin came back to the city of Gera and is sitting now in this small inner courtyard listening to the water of the so called white river, which flows just a few meters ahead of him.
