Zieht runter. Echt runter. Und überzieht den Irrsinn dann auch ein wenig. Die Botschaft wäre auch ohne die eine oder andere Szene, Grausamkeit oder Idiotie im Bürokratie-Vakuum des zu Ende gehenden 3. Reiches gut angekommen. Und auch ohne diese wenigen Momente, die in die Gegenwart greifen. Aber sollte auch nur die Hälfte von dem Gezeigten tatsächlich so passiert sein... sollte man inständig hoffen, beten, agieren, kultivieren oder einleiten, dass es nie wieder zu solch einem Zustand kommt. Kein Film, den man sich gern noch mal ansehen will. Obwohl er von sehr vielen Darstellern gut, widerwärtig, schwitzend, verzweifelt, gehorsam und irre gespielt wird. Und obwohl die schwarzweißen wie ästhetisierten Bilder genauso perfekt passen wie der spärlich dröhnende Soundtrack. Denn irgendwann fühlt sich alles so bitterkalt und schmerzhaft an wie das Abspritzen mit Eiswasser aus Hochdruckschläuchen. Oder eben so falsch wie dieses Schaf im Wolfspelz, um das es hier geht.
Audiovisuell reizvolle Abrechnung mit der zunehmend populären Bagatellisierung von Nazi-Verbrechen, die vor allem im öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen immer stärker um sich greift. ROMMEL, UNSERE MÜTTER UNSERE VÄTER, NICHT ALLE WAREN MÖRDER... ja, wir haben es verstanden! Der gemeine deutsche TV-Gucker und Programmkinogänger sehnt sich nach dem Mythos des guten Nazis(sic). Man möchte endlich wieder mit den Tätern mitfühlen dürfen.

Der in hiesige Gefilde zurückgekehrte Regie-Exilant Robert Schwentke setzt einen großen Haufen auf diese Attitüde und serviert uns knapp zwei Stunden stinkenden, teuflischen Irrsinn, ausgeübt von stinkenden, teuflischen Männern in lächerlichen Uniformen. Dass DER HAUPTMANN nicht frei von dramaturgischen Holprigkeiten und Geschmacklosigkeiten ist, liegt dabei in der Natur der Sache.
Ein erfreulich kruder, unbequemer Film und schwarz-weißer Lichtblick im zeitgenössischen deutschen Kino.
Der Hauptmann is no easy watch. Everything from the dark humor to the soundtrack makes this one of the most suffocating movies I have seen. Because of that it leaves a very strong impression and gives a lot of food for thought. And I guess that is something all of the moviegoers felt up to a certain level, because nobody said a word after the end credits had rolled (those end credits are great BTW).

It’s rare for me to find a World War II gem like this. A bizarre true story that is quite dark, absurd, nihilistic but also with it’s necessary dark and hidden humor at times, but it all works wonderful (much more mature and funnier than that garbage Jojo Rabbit). Great play by Max Hubacher, although his turn to the dark side is a bit out of the blue, but that’s not really a problem since it has enough good supporting actors that portray various characters. Beautiful black and white images, some great shots, nice contrasts, but the sweet hypnotic slowmotions in combination with an ambient soundtrack are the best ones. Overall a crazy, almost surrealistic, impressive true story, ending is also crazy.

So funktioniert ein guter deutscher Film.
Abseits der sehr gut gefilmten, atmosphärisch dichten schwarz/weiß Optik und für deutsche Verhältnisse fast schon großartigen schauspielerischen Leistungen, möchte ich hier vor allen das Drehbuch und dessen Umsetzung, von Regisseur Robert Schwentke herausheben.
Auch wenn der Film von seiner Prämisse auf wahren Begebenheiten beruht, ist die Umsetzung derer, die eben nicht den üblichen filmischen Klischees folgt, etwas ganz besonderes.
Anders ausgedrückt: Hart, schonungslos, ohne Empathie und so regt der Film bei mir, auch lange danach, zum Nachdenken ein.
Starting out, this movie feels extremely wobbly and uncomfortable. Are we really watching a movie from the POV of Nazis? Yes, we are. Quite a jolt from watching BlacKkKlansman last night. Spike Lee is definitely a better filmmaker than Robert Schwentke. Perhaps it's an unfair comparison, but let's go with it. BlacKkKlansman had GREAT set design & costumes which I totally forgot to mention in my review yesterday. The Captain came off looking very cheap - which I usually don't mind. If there's a good story to tell, tell it. I love independent movies. But this was really bare bones minimalism and the story wasn't told that well. The actors were okay, but I wasn't blown away.

The Captain is a grim and grit terror regimen, yet a glossy and high-polished entertainer. that's a tricky one.
I do appreciate any effort of showing the true horrors of the holocaust - respectively war crimes - and working against an historical revisionism, that is - despite different requirements - is too often transported in modern productions.
however it got a couple of things terribly wrong. the high-luster looks are problematic at least - just because you can, you don't have to flex your muscles i'd say. you also have a whole package of fine, well handcrafted suspense cinema here - again a quality, that is slightly questionable in the context of the whole endeavor.
