Der atrioventrikuläre Block steht einerseits in Verbindung mit einigen wichtigen elektropathophysiologischen Mechanismen wie Verlangsamung der Reizleitung und Ersatzrhythmen. Andererseits verknüpft er sich mit interessanten und typischen EKG-Bildern wie Wenckebach-Periode oder Mobitz-Block und mit anderen Vorläufern eines kompletten AV-Blocks wie Schenkel- und Faszikelblöcken und deren Kombinationen. Insgesamt ist der AV-Block mit seinen verschiedenen Schweregraden von großem klinischem Interesse.
