Zusammenfassung

An der E-Seite Großbritanniens beginnt für die Engländer N-England am Humber wie für viele an der W-Seite bereits am Mersey [so z. B. auch 16]; sie sprechen auch vom North-East und der North-East Coast, und eine der großen britischen Eisenbahngesellschaften, die mit ihren Linien das ganze Gebiet beherrschte, hieß London and North Eastern Railway. In einem anderen, engeren Sinn wird neuerdings, namentlich bei der Landesplanung, von einer NE-Region gesprochen. Die Bezeichnung NE-England für das Flachland bis zum schottischen Grenzstrich am Tweed ist durchaus berechtigt. Mit einer großen natürlichen Einheit fällt es allerdings ebensowenig zusammen wie Mittelostengland; denn Landschaften von sehr verschiedenem Gepräge sind in ihm vereinigt. Schräg zum Hauptstreichen der Gesteine, von den kretazischen n. des Humber angefangen bis zu den karbonen n. des Tyne, verläuft die Küstenlinie, zugleich nähert sie sich gegen N immer mehr der Hauptachse der „Central Highlands“ [115], so daß das Flachland schließlich zwischen den Cheviots und dem Meer auf einen schmalen Streifen zusammenschrumpft, das „Cheviot Gate“. Im S geht die Trentsenke aus den Midlands ohne scharfe Grenze in die Yorkshire Plain über, eine Niederung, in welcher die Yorkshire Ouse die Gewässer aus den benachbarten Bergen sammelt; als Yale of Ouse, Yale of York, Yale of Mowbray werden ihre einzelnen Teile bezeichnet.
