The Absolute Value of Language

  • Chapter
Karl Kraus

Abstract

In order to understand Kraus, it is necessary to know his view of language; it involved his view of the world, of philosophy, and of poetry. Even his increasing preoccupation with grammar was not only the pedantic preoccupation of a recluse but also part of his effort to isolate the grain from the chaff and to find ideal, eternal form where there was a chance of its not having been corrupted by conscious purpose.
