The influence of ultra-sonic waves on the permeability of the synovial membrane

  • Published:

Summary

Acid dyes of high diffusibility were administered i.v. and basic dyes intra-arterially to rabbits and the two knee joints were perfused with normal saline, after one knee had been radiated by ultrasound of varying intensity.

The dye appearing in the perfusates of the radiated joints was reduced in practically all animals.

Histological examinations revealed marked inflammatory changes in the composite synovial membrane. It is concluded that these changes are the cause of the reduced permeability of the synovial membrane.

A few experiments suggest that the inflammatory changes are of transitory nature.

Ultrasonic radiation does not seem to be suitable to increase the penetration of chemical substances (drugs) into joints.
