Disclaimer: I have no German knowledge or heritage, therefore, I have no clue as to how "authentic" this place may be, but it sure as hell is a great place if I do say so myself.
The kitchen was closed on a weekday morning (messed up gas line) when we got there, but we were able to order an assortment of pastries: Bavarian croissant, almond brioche, a franzbot, Nutella swirl, spinach and feta danish, and 2 pretzels. And Everything was damn delicious, let me tell you.
We ordered their special drink, a pistachio latte, and this was the only "let down" from the hodge podge we ordered: we couldn't taste any pistachio and the beans tasted burnt.
Def recommend a stop here guys!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 28, 2023
Always see them at the PSU Farmers Market on Saturdays so wanted to checkout their brick and moertar spot. Super cute and cozy place with plenty of seatings inside and outside. It does have that Bavarian/German beer hall energy to it which was very fun!
I have been meaning to try out their pastries but unfortunately the ones I had my eyes were out so alas, guess I'll just have to come back. Instead, we tried a Breakfast Sandwich and a Pretzel Sandwich. The breakfast sandwich we got was a fun take on the usual, using pretzel bun, bratwurst, and curry sauce! It was freshly made, egg was well-cooked, and the cheese was gooey while being crispy on the edges; big fan!
The pretzel sandwich was also very delicious. It's served with a larger pretzel and filled with fresh greens, brie, and ham. Love the mustardy dressing for the greens which was very flavorful and refreshing.
We also got drip coffee to go with the meal and it's bottomless and self-serve.
Staffs were all super friendly and nice. We bought a few bread from them close to closing and they gave us a bunch of free goodies!
They're a bit far away for us but we totally would like to be a regular here. They do close pretty early and their pastries do run especially on the weekends so do plan accordingly or try to catch them at the market.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 27, 2023
The food was ok. I came here thinking the pretzel was going to be good, but it was ok. We order a number of things, but the stand out was the Gretel special pretty good with the brie and jam on a croissant. The almond chocolate croissant was a little to sweet for me. The breakfast pretzel was ok the egg was a little burn.

What a hidden gem! Fressen is the coziest spot for a quick and easy brunch on a drizzly Portland day, and the pretzel bun breakfast sandwiches and decadent cream-filled Berliner donuts will make you forget all about the gloomy weather! The prices are also very reasonable and there is a good amount of seating inside. Definitely get there early if you're trying to sample some of the more popular pastries or breads...they sell out quickly and the line is often out the door, especially on the weekends. Can't wait to go back soon!

Excellent European pastry case you'll no doubt drool over! Don't get there too late if you want to pick from it, the goodies go fast. Their signature pretzel bread makes for a delicious and sturdy sandwich and the eggs were cooked nicely on both our breakfast sandwiches.
Counter service is friendly and helpful with decision making, which is so difficult when you want to take the entire pastry case home. Cute and casual inside with a spacious, covered patio. Street parking only.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 30, 2022
I'm so happy Fressen Artisan Bakery is within walking distance in my new neighborhood in NE Portland. This coffee shop and bakery is an anchor business in the up-and-coming North Montavilla area, offering spacious indoor and outdoor seating options perfect for nearly every kind of gathering you have in mind.
Fressen offers everything from freshly baked soft pretzels, buns and rolls, to gloriously fragrant loaves of bread. Arrive early to have the best selection because their pastry case will likely be empty by noon. I've enjoyed everything I've tried, especially their sausage and egg breakfast sandwich with a pretzel bun.
Fressen is mostly a morning hangout as they generally close by 1 PM, so do yourself a favor and arrive early for the best experience.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Sep 30, 2022
I discovered Fressen at the Portland State University Saturday farmers' market when I was trying to navigate my way through the stalls and was blocked by a massive line. Curious to see what everyone was waiting for, I spotted a pristine display case with rustic loaves on one side and Bavarian-style pastries on the other.
I joined the back of the line and used the waiting time to decide what I wanted to order. By the time I got to the front, I decided to get the almond cake. This turned out to be an excellent choice; the cake was spongy with a delicate crust, and it tasted subtly sweet with an unquestionable almond flavor. This was definitely a special treat, and I now understand why Fressen is so popular!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 13, 2023
This is one of Portland's best hidden gems. This is a phenomenal place to get brunch or breakfast sweets. They have a rotating array of some of the best handmade treats in town. I honestly think the Bacon, Cucumber, & Blue pretzel sandwich is one of Portland's best sandwiches.

My sister in law is German and we found this little gem when we were in Portland. This isn't going to be a long review as we just stopped in to see their selection and have a quick bite to eat.
The pastry options were plentiful and looked delicious! Can't take them all, but I would have said YES to all of them. I opted for the German sausage breakfast sandwich which was full of flavor, especially with the Gruyère cheese, German sausage and curry ketchup.
