The Matthews House continues to host weddings and special events, but also hosts Hearsay on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, starting at 4pm. Hearsay will also open for special pop-up concepts, which will be announced on social media. Look for our sign or check social media for all on-going information.

Prohibitive started when The Matthews House co-owner, Sarah Chung, would unwind with a cocktail on the long, stately porch and wanted to share that experience with her neighbors. “It’s a classic Southern house, so why not gather our neighbors to enjoy classic cocktails tucked away in this cozy atmosphere?” Chung asked.
Opened in September 2022, Prohibitive offered an opportunity for after-work gatherings or a night-cap after an evening enjoying other Downtown Cary offerings. Along with South Line Brewing Co. and Vicious Fishes breweries at West End, Prohibitive drew visitors to the West side of Chatham Street as Downtown Cary’s nightlife expanded.
In 2023, our operations partner, Southern Hospitality Group, relocated its main operations to Mebane, NC. Prohibitive closed for a few months for The Matthews House to do the necessary infrastructure changes in order to operate the bar fully.
In April 2024, we reopened as Hearsay, a weeknight hideaway cocktail bar in downtown Cary.
