Runde Lighthouse is located on Kvalneset at the northwestern tip of the famous bird island Runde. Today, the lighthouse is protected and automated. The main building is used as a self-service tourist cabin by the Ålesund and Sunnmøre Trekking Association. It has 24 beds, a self-service storage facility, electrical cooking appliances, and a waffle maker. Here you can experience unique birdlife and enjoy a scenic ocean view with large waves, wind, and sunshine. Runde Lighthouse is locked with a key managed by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). An overnight hike to Runde Lighthouse is 3.6 km long with an ascent of 260 m a.s.l. The level of difficulty of this hike is marked as green. If you are doing a round trip, the distance will be 7.2 km and the ascent 520 m a.s.l., making the level of difficulty “blue”.
Start walking from the car park in Goksøyra. Follow Goksøyrvegen for about 600 m and turn left up a steep hill. The surface is paved until you reach a plateau (about 300 m). From here, the path runs north through marshy areas and climbs up the mountain ridge. Then it continues west until it passes the peak. From here, the path continues northwest down the marshes and climbs steeply down to the lighthouse. The steepest section of the trail leading down to the lighthouse is secured with steel railings. There are also wooden bridges over the marshes and stone stairs over the most difficult patches.
Turn off County Road 654 (FV654) towards Fosnavåg and take County Road 18 (FV18) in Buholmen at the sign for Runde. Drive for about 14 km until you reach Goksøyra. Leave your car in a large car park on the right side of the road as soon as you come out of the Goksøyr Tunnel. This is the only parking option in the area, so you have to follow Goksøyrvegen for 600 metres until you reach the starting point of the trail.
There is a large car park with sanitary facilities in Goksøyra.
