Just days away from the start of Hanukkah, a popular holiday treat made by a New Jersey-based kosher foods manufacturer is being recalled due to mislabeling.

In a Dec. 1 notice from Manischewitz in Bayonne, the company announced a recall of its dark chocolate coins because the candy may contain undeclared milk as an ingredient, which poses a potential danger to people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.

Also known as gelt, the dark chocolate coins were distributed at stores across New Jersey, New York and Connecticut during the weeks of Sept. 26 through Nov. 28. They come wrapped in silver foil and red netting with a UPC code of 072700200387.

According to Manischewitz, the recall was initiated after its quality control department found a limited number of bags labeled dark chocolate coins contained milk chocolate coins.

The company has received no reports of illness or injury to date and said it “immediately informed all retailers who had purchased this lot code about this recall and instructed them inspect their inventory or remove any potential affected product on their shelves.”

Customers who may have purchased the affected product are being advised to return it for a credit or refund. For more information, contact customer service at [email protected] or 718-369-4600, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Founded in 1888 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Manischewitz is also known for its kosher wine and grape juice, matzo, cookies and macaroons. Its roots in New Jersey date back to 1932, when it opened a factory in Jersey City. That plant was shuttered in 2006 when the company relocated to Newark.

After being acquired by Bayonne-headquartered kosher food distributor Kenover Marketing Corp. (Kayco) in 2019, Manischewitz returned to Hudson County.
