AN AYAH A DAY — Day 22

As-Salaam Alaykum

The theme for today’s Ayah In Sha Allah is “Faithfulness to Allah”.

Before I open today’s discussion, I want us to look at the definition of Faithfulness- it is the concept of “unfailingly remaining loyal and putting that loyalty into consistent practice regardless of extenuating circumstances”. Masha Allah.

Looking at this definition and the discussions we have been having over the past weeks, I want you to ask yourself a question that makes you call yourself to account — “Are you constantly faithful to Allah (subhana wa’taala)”. Are you expending yourself on the path to Him, fighting your nafs for His sake.

Right now the answer might be easy, cause with Ramadan we are all experiencing a “spiritual high” which is wonderful Masha Allah. As you ask yourself this question, you should write down the way you feel, so that you will not forget when you call yourself to account again.

The preceding Ayahs before the above talk about the Greatness of Allah that I have been emphasizing over the course of the past weeks, in order to have it resonate deep within our hearts. I can’t buttress it enough that this state makes one fully submissive and devoted to Allah (azza wa’jal).

The above Ayah then opens up into the quality that Allah loves in His Believing Slave and enjoining oneself in what Allah loves is a way of showing this faithfulness and “respect”to Allah. Just like I said above, if one was to truly understand the Greatness and Might of Allah, you would always keep yourself in check and be able to call yourself to account.

The Ayah tells us Allah (subhana wa’taala) loves those who have humility — who compose themselves and not let any thing make them lose their calmness, hence an extenuating circumstance. The reason behind this Ayah in particular is because, this quality is important in the coming days and nights, we have to be cautious about what we utter and not allow ourselves be lost in anger or mundane discussions. This is because as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, we have to watch our utterances especially in these coming nights, which I believe might be harder since we have this notion that “I have broken my fast already” therefore not being cautious of our utterances which can make one can lose out on the Night of Power- Laylatul Qadr.

I felt this should be discussed because of an Hadith I heard which goes thus (narrating in my own words) “The Prophet (SAW) came upon two of his companions fighting during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, uttering bad words to each other and when Ya Rasulallah saw them, he scolded them and said their actions have made them lose Laylatul Qadr, and that the power and blessings of the night has been lifted from them”. Subhanallah, just imagine how Ya Rasulallah and those companions will feel to lose a night better than a 1000 nights because of mere utterances that can be controlled.

Looking at the subsequent Ayah, it also talks about a quality that is important in these last few days of Ramadan which bestows one with the Love of Allah. Allah loves those who stand in Tahajjud exalting him through the night while the world sleeps. This shows our determination to attain His Love and Submit to Him, for one leaves the comfort of one’s bed and stands in the cold of the night, worshipping Ya Dhul-Jaalal-wal-ikram. Therefore, I know we are all hoping to ask Allah (subhana wa’taala) for our heart desires in these coming nights, but this shouldn’t be the sole purpose for standing in worship. Attaining His Pleasure, Love, and Worshiping Him out of pure love, submission and respect should be priority above ones needs. Because once you attain this level of faithfulness, everything becomes automatic, when Allah Loves a slave, He eases his affairs and accept His Du’as even before asking for He is Ya Aleem.

These two Ayahs look into crucial aspects one has to emulate in these nights.

May Allah give us the strength and ability to go through these coming nights with humility and a level of submission. May Allah bless us with His Love and accept all our du’as.
