"The shame of Compiègne is redeemed!' reads the inscription on this card, which shows a photograph of the train car used for the surrender of the German army at the end of World War I and returned, at Hitler's order, to the historical site for the French capitulation. After the signing ceremony, the train car was taken to Berlin, where it was exhibited as a trophy until it was destroyed by British bombers later in the war. A replica has been placed on permanent exhibition in the Armistice Museum at Compiègne.The French were presented with the articles of surrender on 21 June 1940 and signed them on the following day.
