Zur Letzten Instanz | Berlin’s Oldest Restaurant

Over the last couple of decades of my gastronomical travels, I have been to many of the oldest eateries in Europe and the UK, including Rules of London, the Historic Sausage House in Regensburg, and Botin in Madrid. All have been unique dining experiences, considering they were all the oldest in one way or another.

On my most recent visit to Berlin, I added one more to my on going list of “The Oldest Restaurants” with Zur Letzten Instanz. This historic eatery opened its doors in 1621, making it 400 years old this year. Zur Letzten Instanz is also located on the Eastside Berlin, which gives it another impressive thread to its historical tapestry.

The interior dining halls were very handsome, and traditional with dark wood furnishings, beer steins, and old crockery, plus a winding iron staircase leading to the floors above.

If the weather is in your favor, there is a lovely patio to the side of the restaurant. That is where I had taken a seat, and it was beautiful outside space with cobble stone pavers, wood patio seating ,and a giant shade tree.

– Konigsberger Klopse –

Meatballs in Savoury Sauce | Casperberries | Mashed Potatoes Parsley

For my lunch I decided on the meatballs in savoury sauce, which were very tender and flavorsome. I enjoyed all the combined flavors especially the creamy sauce, which smothered the meatballs and mashed potatoes. It was a very tasty and hearty dish.

– Apfelsaft –

Translated to Apple Juice, and no other country does it quite as well as Germany.

If we have ever met, then you know that I do not drink juice unless there is alcohol in it. I was introduced to Apfelsaft while on my first visit to Germany back in 2015. Ever since then, whenever I travel back to this country I at least drink one glass of German apple juice, and a whole lot of apple strudel.

Zur Letzten Instanz was a magnificent addition to my on going list of “The Oldest Restaurants”. It was everything that I love- old, charming, historic, and delicious.
