Virgil's Aeneid: Strasburg, 1502.

Fine medieval woodcut from the 1502 first Sebastian Brandt edition of Virgil's Aeneid, printed by the renowned German printer Johannes Gruninger in Strasbourg. Later hand color.

One of the great German woodcut books of the Renaissance, this edition is rightly acclaimed for its magnificent series of illustrations. While the specific artist who created this stunning woodcut illustration is unknown, scholars have named him the "Late Master of the Gruninger Workshop".

Woodcut depicts a medieval arcadian landscape in which Misenus's body is found and preparations for his burial mound have begun.
