The conservative, the reactionary, since the times of Bakunin and later Fascism, decry the avant-gardists wherever they reveal themselves as elitists, who possess a distance toward real people, or the volk. If being an elitist means daring to claim that the people are deprived access to the highest achievements of society, are deprived conscious mastery over them, be they scientific or cultural, then to the charge of being elitists the avant-gardists must plead guilty as charged.
