Demon Gaze II Review - Just another dungeon crawler

It's nice to see how more and more Japanese studios are starting to get a certain fame in the West. At the moment, NIS is perhaps one of the biggest if we only look at the amount of releases that they have per year. Today we are going to talk about a sequel to perhaps one of their least well-known titles here, Demon Gaze. The first Demon Gaze only appeared on the PS Vita, so many people did not have the opportunity to play this game. The people who played it were mostly very positive, so in that respect it might be nice to welcome Demon Gaze II on the PlayStation 4.

Very standard

The story of Demon Gaze II is very "been there, done that". Your character wakes up with amnesia and can not remember anything. Apparently you were part of a group of rebels; at least, that is what the first best person who turns out to know you will tell you. However, one thing seems to have changed to you: one of your eyes. This eye possesses the power of the Demon Gaze, allowing you to absorb demons that you have defeated in your eye to add them to your team. Admittedly, the latter is less standard.

Before you start, you can put your own avatar together. Here are a lot of possibilities and colors that you can choose from. Your character is purely an image that will be shown during the story and not during the fighting. More important, however, is the choice that determines what kind of fighter boss you will be. You can choose between good, neutral and malicious, each with their own skills. For example, there are a lot of defensive spells, malignant attacks and neutrality is of course a balance between the two.

Standard, but good

Demon Gaze II is of course a dungeon crawler, just like her predecessor. You play from a first-person perspective, where you navigate through different levels. While walking around, your map of that area is shown more and more, but you can also come across treasures. Also in traditional dungeon crawler style you will never see your enemies coming. Danger lurks on every box and you can just end up in a fight. Time to stand our ground!

In the fighting you only see your enemy, without any fighting animations. You carry out attacks and your opponent falls back on. These kinds of battles can be quite dry, without all the flashy animations of today. Fortunately, Demon Gaze II brings with it an original element in the form of the demonic forces that you can get. Depending on which path you have chosen, you can use the powers of the various demons. Here are at least plenty of variations, which keeps the fighting interesting. Eventually you want to see what all kinds of different demons can do.

One thing we have to give this sequel is that it has become much more accessible than the first part. This time we can choose from different levels of difficulty, which is nice for novice dungeon crawlers. Also the battles are running a bit faster this time than in the first part, an improvement that many people had asked for. This ensures that the "gravel" feels less tedious. It is nice to see that with the feedback from the players actually what has been done.

Same song

As i have already mentioned in this review, the first Demon Gaze has appeared exclusively on the PS Vita. This second part is also on the PS Vita appeared, but also on the PlayStation 4. You probably already know which way we go, because Demon Gaze II is anything but beautiful. The dungeons that you walk through have little to no decoration and everything looks very angular. Even for PS Vita standards, this is not really a nice game. The drawn characters look well cared for and in certain fights the enemies even have some movement in their drawings.

Conclusion

Demon Gaze II improves a number of points compared to the first part, but also stumbles considerably because it is "just another dungeon crawler". In addition to the demon powers, it is not that much different from the other hundred dungeon crawlers on the market. Moreover, it is a pity that there is little to watch during play. Perhaps there will ever be a Demon Gaze III which will do even better, but for now we have to do with this second part, which is definitely an entertaining title for lovers of dungeon crawlers, but perhaps too rough for others to see.

➕ Demon powers
➕ Avatar options
➕ Accessibility
➕ Beautiful drawings

➖ The rest is less beautiful
➖ Cliché story
➖ Seems very similar to other dungeon crawlers

Thanks for reading.
