Steep Road to the Olympics DLC Review - Practice for the real thing

Steep proved last year that the digital snow slopes could bring just as much fun as the real work. Now, a year later, the Winter Games are coming and snowfall in Korea. To celebrate this occasion, a new extension offers extra winter fun. With the Steep Road to the Olympics DLC review we travel to the snowy east.

Anyone who loves to roll around in the fresh snow can indulge in the expansion of Steep. This time the trip will go to South Korea, where the Olympic Winter Games will take place next year. The ideal time to warm up and explore the course.

This is possible mainly in the story mode that Road to the Olympics is rich. The aim of this campaign is that you, as a nameless athlete, prepare to participate in the upcoming winter games. You choose from one of eight generic athletes and go on the adventure. What is noticeable here is that the DLC really wants to help you with everything you need to do, especially in the beginning.

A not always interesting campaign

There are numerous tutorials that you must complete in order to be able to make progress. You should think of the simplest jumps, something that is no problem for seasoned players. The approach is fun, but the effect is not quite as hoped. The storyline now feels more like an introduction to new players than a challenge for existing fans.

Between the gameplay you will be addressed by a number of real athletes, who tell in various videos about their own experiences while practicing their sport. Funny thought, but it comes out of the blue and does not really add anything to the overall picture. If you have achieved your final goal - achieving a gold medal in three disciplines - there is no satisfaction. The campaign is not why you take this DLC into your home.

No, you do more for the fact that a brand new area is added to the game. Korea, the area you roam around during the campaign, can not be explored freely. But the other area, Japan, is free to be examined from top to bottom. Even though it happens to a lesser extent than you are used to in the game.

A different focus than the rest of the game

The Road to the Olympics DLC focuses mainly on snowboarding and skiing, partly because paragliding and base jumping are not official Olympic parts. As a result, the nicest parts of the basic game are immediately crossed out. Eternally sin.

The remaining disciplines are well worked out again. The DLC contains a number of cool events that sweat the seasoned digital winter sports enthusiast. In addition, the grinding, a function that was added to the game later, is even more extensive this time. Everywhere in the world you will find fences and pipes that you can slide over to cause a spark of rain.

The focus of the Road to the Olympics DLC is therefore slightly different from the previous content with these changes. The difficulty is, after provoking the beginning, some hyped and it is noticeable that Ubisoft well, the game has sat tinkering since its release last year. Yet there are still stumbling blocks that are present, where the changeable physics are a good example.

Conclusion

The Steep Road to the Olympics DLC certainly does not reinvent the wheel. You can see it better as a change from summer to winter tires. The core of the content remains the same as the original, but the focus has shifted somewhat with the linear story line and the lack of some original disciplines.
The new game world is full of content to play around, where the level of difficulty can be quite high. The grinding is also neatly processed this time in the total package, although old problems still remain around the corner. Road to the Olympics is a nice addition to the Steep package, but feels more like a snack than a fully-fledged new chapter.

➕ A new area to explore
➕ Challenging new events
➕ Grinden now full gameplay element

➖ Story mode is disappointing
➖ Korea is not free to explore
➖ Paragliding and basejumping absent
