Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed Review – CRYPTO STRIKES AGAIN!

Back in 2020, to the surprise of many (myself included), THQ Noordic released a remake for Destroy All Humans! This being a whole 15 years after the original release. So there is no doubt that I was super excited when Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed was announced. Especially given that this sequel built upon everything that had made the original game great, whilst expanding on the open world formula that allows you to wreak havoc whilst controlling our good old pal Cryptosporidium-138.

For newcomers to the series, Destroy All Humans! 2 is set in 1969 (10 years after the first game), where the wise-cracking alien Cryptosporidium-138, or Crypto for short, is masquerading as the president of the United States. I know, ridiculous already. After learning that the KGB have caught on to his disguise, they attempt to kill him by destroying America. As a result Crypto starts hunting them down all over the globe, whilst finding out that something much more dastardly is afoot.

Destroy All Humans! 2 is back!

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed is absolutely hilarious! The story remains unaltered, delivering every joke in the same way as originally intended. This does mean that, as the game itself will tell you, “the story, words and images contained within may be shocking to the modern human brain!” There isn’t much more I can say about the narrative. It’s exactly the same as what you remember if you played it back in 2006!

Reprobed’s gameplay feels absolutely nostalgic. You could be fooled into thinking that this is exactly how the original game felt. Whilst general traversal may feel quite similar to the original, because movement in the original was already slick, the gunplay and psychokinesis abilities have been largely improved. The psychokinesis in Reprobed is used with only one button, just like in the remake for Destroy All Humans. This means that you can now fling your enemies large distances away with ease. This is made even easier by the fact that humans don’t feel as heavy as they did in the 2006 release. There are a bunch of quality of life improvements made in Reprobed as well! This is most noticeable in the sub menus and huds. This really helped bring Destroy All Humans! 2 into the modern era of gaming.

Destroy All Humans! 2 is just the way I remember it!

The biggest, and most obvious improvement in Reprobed is the visual design. Admittedly, I was originally a little concerned about the visuals of Reprobed after playing the first game’s remake. Because, despite loving it, the character models honestly looked goofy. I don’t know if it was just me that thought this, but the characters’ faces looked like really ugly caricatures. However, this turned out not to be the case in Reprobed. The character designs are much better, whilst still maintaining that somewhat cartoony visual style that works so well for the Destroy All Humans! Series.

Co-op is still a big feature in Reprobed, which is awesome, because there is nothing better than body snatching humans together with your friends or significant other. However, the co-op still seems to only be local split screen, which is a little disappointing! After all, online multiplayer is such a big part of gaming these days.

  • Crypto is always a bit of a smart mouth! - Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed
  • The hud may not be as minimalist as the original, but it is definitely more functional - Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed
  • The character models look much better than the remake of the first game... - Destroy All Huma
  • Splitscreen is still great fun! - Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed

Decision

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed is a great example of how a modern remake should be made. Being really faithful to the source material, whilst upgrading the visuals, mechanics and gameplay without it feeling too different. It is a great way to revisit the antics of President Crypto for fans of the series, as well as a great starting point for new players.

Great

Destroy All Humans! 2 does a great job of faithfully recreating the world that captivated so many fans back in 2006! The gameplay mechanics have been refined to make some aspects, particularly the psychokinesis, feel a lot more natural and slick to execute. The massive overhaul to the visuals makes the game look fantastic on modern hardware, whilst still keeping the semi-cartoony art style that was present in the original.
