Secret Provence | Lakeside village of Bauduen

Bauduen is a small medieval village in the Var department of Provence. From it’s lofty position on a hillside, it overlooks the southern shores of the Lac de Sainte-Croix. This traditional Provençal village offers panoramic views of the pure, calm waters and natural beauty of the Verdon Natural Park.

Bauduen: The village by the lake

At Bauduen you will find a pebble beach. Whilst it isn’t the prettiest of the lake’s beaches, its location makes it popular with tourists and ideal for families. Parking is close to the beach and serves both the village and the lakeside.

Near the beach is a natural harbour where windsurfing, kayaks and paddle boards can be found. It is also the perfect starting point for a walk along the promenade and maybe a coffee at one of a handful of village cafes.

Historic village

Set behind the promenade is the village itself. A typical Provençal village, full of charm. Narrow, cobbled streets wind through old stone houses with pastel shutters faded by the summer sun. At the heart of the village is a 19^th Century sundial with “NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR”, a motto of Louis XIV (the Sun King) meaning ‘above all men’ proudly displayed.

Fountains dotted throughout the village offer spots to stop, cool down and take in the beauty of this historic place. Bauduen has preserved traces of its history, including the 16^th Century Church of Saint-Pierre, hidden amongst the trees at the top of the village. From here, you look down over faded red roof tops and down onto the water of the lake. It is impossible not to get the camera out!

What to see near Bauduen

Near to Bauduen are numerous beautiful attractions. To the north is the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, officially one of the prettiest villages in France. The lively village has houses built into the huge rocky face that edges it. And to the east is the dramatic Gorge du Verdon. It’s a ‘must see’ with walkers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts alike.

Bauden isn’t large but there are a few restaurants to choose from. L’O a la Bouche at the edge of the village is hard to beat. Here you’ll enjoy lunch with the most magnificent view.

Bauduen isn’t the most well-known of Provençal villages, but it is worth a visit to this lakeside lovely.
