Summary

Biography

CAREER

  • Torkelson becomes the fourth Arizona State baseball player to go No. 1 overall in program history, easily an NCAA-high – two more than any other program. He joins Rick Monday (1965), Floyd Bannister (1976) and Bob Horner (1978) to earn the prestigious designation out of ASU.
  • He is the 22nd first round selection for the Sun Devils in program history (June draft only, no supplemental rounds) – good for the second-highest tally in NCAA history (Stanford’s 23). It is the 51st first round selection in program history with the supplementary, January and June Secondary phase drafts included as well.
  • It marks the second consecutive season that a Sun Devil has gone in the first 10 picks of the MLB Draft, joining Hunter Bishop’s 10th overall selection by the San Francisco Giants last season. Torkelson is the 14th Top-10 pick in Sun Devil program history.
  • Torkelson marks the 443rd overall draft pick for Arizona State – also a total that leads the nation.
  • Torkelson was selected by the Tigers as a third baseman despite playing his career at ASU as a first baseman. He is the first third baseman to go first overall since Pat Burrell in 1998 and just the fifth third baseman to be selected first overall in MLB Draft history. Had he been selected as a first baseman, it would have been the first time in history a right-handed first baseman had gone first overall in the MLB Draft while also being the first ever college first baseman to be selected first.
  • It also marked the first time a college position player went from being undrafted out of high school to the No. 1 overall pick since Nebraska outfielder Darin Erstad in 1995 – though it should be noted Erstad’s high school didn’t have a baseball program. Arkansas third baseman Jeff King in 1986 would mark the last time prior to that.
  • Torkelson had 54 homers in his career, second in Sun Devil history and needed just three to surpass Bob Horner’s long-standing school record of 56 – a feat he almost surely would have achieved with a full season this year.
  • Torkelson played 35 multi-game series at ASU and homered at least once in 28 of those. He played 20 Pac-12 series and homered in 18 - the season finales against Cal (2018) and Stanford (2019) being the only exceptions. He had at least one hit in 104 of his 129 career games and multiple hits in 50 of those.
  • Torkelson needed 19 home runs to break into the NCAA all-time Top-10 in career homers and in doing so would have become the first player in the BBCOR era to even sniff the feat. He would be just the second player since 2000 to have a career home run tally that left him in the Top-10 in NCAA homers (Matt LaPorta, Florida).
  • He was the active career leader in homers at 54, regardless of NCAA level, and had 17 more home runs than the next closest Division I player.
  • Torkelson bat .337 in his career with 130 RBIs, 152 runs scored, 33 doubles and 54 long balls. He slugged a an incredible .729 over his career – also just shy of Mitch Jones school record .731 from 1999-2000. He struck out just 104 times in his career while walking 110 times. He was also solid defensively, recording a career fielding percentage of .987.

Junior (2020)

  • When Torkelson actually saw pitches to hit this year, he responded with six home runs on his 17 base hits and four doubles for a gaudy .780 slugging percentage in the COVID-19 shortened, 17-game season.
  • His six homers were 15th in the nation. The junior led the Pac-12 and was 19th nationally in slugging (.780) and was first in the league in OBP (.598/4th nationally) and in runs scored (24/3rd nationally).
  • Torkelson reached base in all 17 games this season and rode a 22-game reached-base streak dating back to last year.
  • Torkelson led the nation with 31 walks, an incredible 15 of which were intentional. He had 10 more walks than any other player in the country. With those numbers extrapolated over the course of a whole season, Torkelson would have challenged the NCAA record for single-season walks.
  • Torkelson drew a walk in 15-of-17 games this season and had a school record five walks in ASU’s extra-inning victory over New Mexico State, tying the record set by Kole Calhoun (2010), Alvin Davis (1982) and Fred Nelson (1967).
  • His 15 intentional walks were already the most by any Sun Devil in a season since at least 1998 (Jeff Larish with 11 in 67 games in 2005). His 15 intentional walks were more than the entire Sun Devil TEAM posted in 16 of the last 22 seasons.

Sophomore (2019)

  • Torkelson was the Pac-12 home run leader for the second season in a row, finishing the season with 23 – good for fifth in the nation. He became the first Pac-12 player to lead the conference in homers in back-to-back seasons since Oregon State's Michael Conforto 2012 and 2013, though it should be noted Conforto only hit 13 and 11 in those seasons.
  • Torkelson is only the third player in Pac-12 history to have back-to-back 20+ home run seasons.
  • Torkelson ranked in the Top-10 in the Pac-12 in a slew of categories including homers (1st), walks (41/8th), average (.351/8th), hits (85/3rd/33rd nationally), runs (69/3rd/18th nationally), RBIs (66/2nd/27th nationally), slugging (.707/3rd/17th nationally) and total bases (171/1st/5th nationally).
  • Torkelson led the team with 27 hits with runners in scoring position, recording 27 hits on 67 chances (.403)
  • He was an extremely tough out to end the inning, extending the inning 26-of-67 times with two outs (.388) with a team-best 35 two-out RBI - 15 more than any other player on the roster.
  • Hit or not, Torkelson consistently found a way to successfully advance baserunners, doing so 71 times on 142 opportunities (.500).
  • With his first home run in the series against Cal, Torkelson has homered in every single Pac-12 ballpark in the league despite being just a sophomore.
  • Torkelson has played 29 weekend series at ASU and homered at least once in 23 of those. He has played 20 Pac-12 series and homered in 18 - the season finales against Cal (2018) and Stanford (2019) being the only exceptions
  • Defensively, Torkelson made huge strides and helped turn 10 more double plays than any other player in the Pac-12 (57), which was a testament to some of the impressive stretches and picks he has made to make those possible.
  • He has just four errors on the year despite being sixth in Pac-12 in defensive chances (476) and one of those came while he was playing out of position in right field for one inning in a game earlier this season.
  • Joined Brett Wallace as the only other player in Sun Devil history to be a two-time semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
  • Competed for the U.S. Collegiate National Team for the second consecutive summer following his sophomore campaign

Freshman (2018):

  • Wrapped up a historic freshman campaign by taking home numerous national and conference awards.
  • A unanimous All-American, as every major baseball media outlet in the nation rewarded the freshman with at least one All-America accolade (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America, NCBWA, and Perfect Game).
  • Honored with Perfect Game's National Freshman of the Year award.
  • Named a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, an award honoring the best player in college baseball.
  • National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America named him as a third-team All-America selection.
  • Earned third-team recognition from Perfect Game.
  • Placed on the Perfect Game Freshman All-America First Team
  • Named by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as the National Co-Freshman of the Year and the NCBWA as the National Freshman Hitter of the Year.
  • Just the seventh Sun Devil in school history to be named an All-American as a freshman, joining Mike Kelly (1989) and Casey Myers (1998) as the only two ASU position players to be named All-Americans as freshman.
  • Pitchers Kendall Carter (1981), Phil Lowery (1996), Mike Leake (2007) and Ryan Kellogg (2013) are the only other freshmen in program history to be named All-Americans.
  • The third Sun Devil to be named Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, joining Ike Davis (2006) and Jason Kipnis (2008).
  • Pac-12 All-Conference First Team member.
  • Lead the country during the regular season with 25 home runs – two more than any other player and just one shy of the NCAA freshman record.
  • Became just the sixth player to reach 25 home runs since the BBCOR batting technology changes took effect in 2011 and the only freshman in the NCAA to reach the milestone in that time.
  • Surpassed the previous Sun Devil freshman record of 11 home runs set by Barry Bonds in 1983 against Washington State.
  • Finished tied with Bob Horner (1978) for second in ASU single-season history in home runs, just two shy of Mitch Jones' school record 27 in 2000.
  • Completed his spectacular freshman season 66-for-206 (.320), launching 25 home runs and driving in 53 runs.
  • Slugged a gaudy .743 on the season (25 homers, 12 doubles), the third-highest total for any freshman in the NCAA in the past two decades and the highest for a freshman in the BBCOR era (since 2011). Only Rickie Weeks (.849 in 2001) and Jeremy Baltz (.771, 2010) posted higher freshman slugging percentages in the past 20 years.
  • In Pac-12 games only, he led the conference in slugging (.754), runs (38), total bases (86) and home runs (14). No other player in the league led the conference in more than two categories – compared to four for Torkelson.
  • Scored 59 runs on the season, third-most in ASU freshman history while his 53 total RBI were fifth among all freshmen in Sun Devil lore.
  • The 66 hits are ninth in ASU freshman history.
