  • Elizabeth meets Goerg Wilhelm of Brandenburg in Mondorf

After Cologne, Prince Moritz, Prince Friedrich Henry of Nassau, and Prince Emanuel of Portugal went hunting. Elizabeth and the members of James I’s commission were accompanied by the officers of the archbishop and prince elector of Cologne to the neighborhood of Mondorf. The young elector of Brandenburg (Georg Wilhelm) met Elizabeth there where they ate breakfast in an open field. Afterwards Elizabeth boarded the ship ordained by her husband to carry her to Oppenheim (in the Palatinate). After the princess and the English commission were settled in their boats, the Brandenburg prince took his leave of them and traveled home. The Princess, instead, sailed with her train (divided among about thirty ships) up the Rhine and arrived the same evening in Winternum (Königswinter).

    Prose:
This prince Georg Wilhelm of Brandenburg was the son of the elector of Brandenburg, Johann Sigismund. The Brandenburg electors were key players in the Cleves-Jülich succession crisis and by 1613 had reached an uneasy settlement with Wolfgang Wilhelm in which they ruled Cleves and the Mark and Pfalz-Neuburg ruled Jülich and Berg. Brayshay claims it was Georg Wilhelm's father who met Elizabeth and that he escorted her from Bonn to Heidelberg in a show of deference to Friedrich as the leading elector among the seven electoral princes of the Holy Roman Empire (Brayshay, p. 389-390). Prince Georg Wilhelm was to wed a sister of Friedrich in 1619.

  • Lunch with the Bishop of Trier in Koblenz

The next day, the Elizabeth's party arrived in Koblenz, a beautiful city belonging to the Bishop of Trier, in good time. They were lodged at the bishop’s court and had a stately lunch there of all types of superb fish (because it was a fast day) and stately wines. They were greeted by the city with somewhat threatening canon fire from the bridge over the Mosel and from the fortress Hermanstein. After lunch, the party boarded ships again and passed the night in Braubach, ruled by the Landgrave of Hessen.

  • Elizabeth and Friedrich reunite in Gaulsheim

As everything was prepared for the journey to Heidelberg, the princess did not want to linger any longer and instead went with just a few horses over the Rhine to “Geylsheim.” Because the Friedrich had a message that the princess was already at Bacharach, she was met there by the count palatinate Johann Casimir and they went on the hunt togehter. They were happy to meet once again and then went together to “Geilzheim.”

Thankfully, on this day, the prince-elector and his wife arrived safely and happily in “Geilzheim.” The elector received Elizabeth in a stately fashion and the alighted the waiting coaches next to the royal commission (who had gotten in their armor and gotten ready at the city hall). They were introduced and greeted by the fully-armored four companies of soldiers and greeted with fire. They spent the night there and after breakfast (where at least 150 tables were fed), they boarded their ships again and arrived safely in Mainz.

  • Elizabeth and Friedrich visit the Archbishop in Mainz

The arrival of the new electoress was known by all along the Rhine and therefore, the Archbishop of Mainz also sent ambassadors to Bingen to wait for the princess and invite her to Mainz, which invitation she accepted. ...

Friedrich and Elizabeth and the English commission arrived in Mainz by boat and were greeted by many companies of food soldiers. They were led by the officers of the elector of Mainz into the elector’s palace—Friedrich was lodged in the archbishop’s rooms and Elizabeth in the “emperor’s chamber.” Following the dinner, at which food was abundant, Friedrich and Elizabeth were honored with two staely fireworks, one in the palace and the other ouside on the Rhine. They were also honored with a gift of a ton of wine and twenty-four “Malter” of oats. On the following Wednesday, after Friedrich and Elizabeth had visited some churches and other things and taken breakfast, they returned to their ships and arrived the same day in Oppenheim.
