Quarto, later stiff vellum, newly rebacked in vellum with morocco gilt label, two small wormholes in blank area of title and next few leaves, inner gutter of title strengthened, title bit soiled and with old monastic note and shelf mark, ownership inscriptions in Cyrillic at blank foot of leaves C2 through E3 and inscription dated 1758. Light waterstains, yet a respectable copy. This has Lipsius's Analecta sive Observationes Religuiae Ad Militiam Et Hosce Libros, printed in Antwerp by Plantin in 1598; Adams records it as a separate publication. The numerous plates and text illustrations as well as the large folding plate depict particular aspects of the Roman armies, the arrangement of their camps,their insignia, battle dress, etc. Adams I, 782 and Adams I 760. Because of the value of this item, exta postal insurance or registry fees may be required.

With wonderful full page engraved plates, a double page plate at 288 in the first section, along with text cuts. Corresponds to OCLC 1090203958, complete except for blanks. In what appears to be a 1700s calf leather binding with gold corner decorations, gilt and blind stamped florals to the spine compartments, gilt edges. Corners somewhat rubbed, boards reattached, original spine laid down, old fragile green silk ties still partially present. Interior more modern brown marbled end papers, title page with printer s device, old ownership name in dark brown ink. Greek with Latin translation in 2 columns. The "R" quire more browned, ditto "a" quire, ditto LL quire, leaf GG has a small brown stain with a hole affecting one letter, otherwise moderate light foxing throughout, clean and unmarked with no marginalia. Lovely large margin paper. Finely illustrated. Justus Lipsius (Joost Lips; 18 October 1547 23 March 1606) was a Flemish philologist, philosopher and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism, as well as this important work on ancient Roman warfare based on writings of Polybius. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 660 pages.

En la primera de ellas, De militia romana, se editan a doble columna amplios extractos en griego y latín de Polibio, autor que Justo Lipsio contribuyó a divulgar entre los tratadistas militares de la Edad Moderna. Este ejemplar había pertenecido a juristas catalanes del siglo XVII; contiene una nota suelta manuscrita en catalán sobre documentación notarial que por aquel entonces estaba en manos de Ramón de Vilana Perles, influyente notario de finales del siglo XVII y años de la Guerra de Sucesión. Anteriormente el volumen había pertenecido a Judocus Sixtus, quien reutilizó como hoja de guarda un premio escolar obtenido en 1635 en Amsterdam.

Portadas grabadas con la marca tipográfica. Texto acompañado de apostillas marginales, capitulares y viñetas. Ilustran la obra preciosos grabados calcográficos. Pergamino época, lomo rotulado. Buen ejemplar. [Ref. C16N421]. Importante volumen que contiene cuatro obras del filólogo y humanista belga Justo Lipsio. La primera, "De militia romana", está dividida en dos partes, y la segunda tiene una portada propia con el título "Analecta sive observationes reliquae ad militiam et hosce libros". Esta segunda portada presenta ligeros cambios tipográficos en la marca del taller de los Plantino. La obra versa sobre el ejército romano, sacado de los comentarios del historiador romano Polibio, y contiene valiosos grabados calcográficos y alguno xilográfico. A esta primera obra sigue "De amphiteatro", también en dos partes, con una segunda titulada: "De amphiteatris quae extra Romam libellus, in quo forma eorum aliquot et typi". Es un interesante texto sobre el anfiteatro romano de la ciudad y sobre algunos otros que se encuentran fuera de ella, con extraordinarios grabados calcográficos, algunos de gran tamaño. La tercera obra, "Saturnalium sermonum" trata de las fiestas romanas llamadas saturnales y en concreto, de las luchas de gladiadores. Aquí también se observan ligeras diferencias en la marca tipográfica de los Plantino. Y la cuarta y última obra, "Polirceticon", trata de las diversas armas y máquinas de guerra de los romanos, y está ilustrada, así mismo, con espectaculares grabados calcográficos, muchos a toda página.
