Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Kant s Masterpiece: Arguably the Most Important Philosophical Work in Modern TimesKANT, Immanuel, Critik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason), Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, Riga, 1781. 1 blank leaf + TP + 2 leaves = Dedication + 8 leaves = Vorrede + 1 leaf = Inhalt + [1]-856 + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First Edition [Warda 59]. PMM 226 Kant s masterpiece, the book that made him world-famous, and arguably the most important book of philosophy published in modern times. "Kant s great achievement was to conclude finally the line on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy " (PMM, p. 137). Having been woken from his "dogmatic slumbers" by his reading of Hume, Kant went on to effect a "Copernican" revolution in philosophy the effects of which have not yet subsided. In a letter to Mendelssohn, dated August 18, 1873, Kant claims that the book was the result of twelve years reflection and that the writing was "affected within four or five months, the greatest attention being paid to the substance, but less regard being had for the form and for the interests of the readers who would understand it easily." Printing and the Mind of Man 226CONDITION: Very good+ in contemporary half calf with light brown boards. Spine with raised bands. Author and title in gilt on a brownish/orange label with a gilt floral design in the other five compartments. The boards are lightly worn but the spine retains much of the gilt. Moderate foxing to title page. Tightly bound copy with clean pages throughout. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first edition in English of a tectonic work.*** 8vo. xxxvi, 655, [1], [1] pp. The rare 8 pages of publisher s ads tipped in at the front - priority unknown. Faint damp staining on the lower third and browning of the first 30 leaves - the rest quite clean. Some splitting at rear joints. Spine label worn. Corners bumped. Covers with modest wear. Contemporary owner signature on title page. Overall, a Very Good copy of a book that s quite rare in original cloth.*** 'The Critique of Pure Reason is one of the most important works in the history of philosophy. In this work, Kant articulates his "transcendental idealism" and seeks to show a way to resolve the problems with both British empiricism and Continental rationalism. Martin Heidegger has explained the importance of this text as follows: "Because of the Critique of Pure Reason all preceding philosophy is put in a new light, and for the period that comes after, this Critique gives rise to a new philosophical problematic." As one of the most important philosophical texts of all time, the first Critique is a sweeping study of the nature of knowledge and reality that transformed study within metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, phenomenology, philosophy of religion, and even ethics.' *** The genesis of this translation involved the important and irascible philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer. In December 1829, after reading an anonymous article in the British magazine Foreign Review and Continental Miscellany calling for an English translation of Kant, Schopenhauer wrote to the author via the publishers suggesting himself for the task. He sought the author's help in finding a publisher, and enclosed a sample translation of Kant's Prolegomena to evidence his English prowess. A swift response arrived from the author, Liverpudlian merchant and translator Francis Haywood, proposing a collaborative effort with split profits. This was unsatisfactory to Schopenhauer, and he appealed directly to the publishers for help, pointing out that "a century may pass ere there shall again meet in the same head so much Kantian philosophy with so much English as happen to dwell together in mine." Ultimately, this attempt would fall apart and the Critique wouldn't be published until this translation in 1838 - which would later be seen as a mangled effort that didn't accurately convey Kant's ideas, thus vindicating Schopenhauer. Would that he had been the one to execute it *** A must have rarity for most any rare book collection, let alone any purporting a connection to philosophy. *** Ref: Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, Professor Patrick Frierson Arthur Schopenhauer's English Schooling, Patrick Bridgwater Arthur Schopenhauer, Peter Lewis *** Please email us for better pricing.

Cardboard covers. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Early Manuscript Defense of the Critique of Pure ReasonOriginal, one-of-a-kind handwritten manuscript defense of Kant s Epistemology. 196-page manuscript in clear German cursive with some deletions and corrections, ink on clean paper. (1790?), Quarto. An extensive presentation and defense of Kant's theory of knowledge, probably written as the basis for a lecture or series of lectures. There are five main sections: Einleitung (34 paragraphs) Theorie des Vorstellungsvermögens überhaupt (30 paragraphs) Theorie der Sinnlichkeit (35 paragraphs) Theorie des Verstandes (64 paragraphs) Kritik der bisherigen Methaphisick (21 paragraphs)Many of the paragraphs contain numbered "Anmerkungen" (further reflections). The identity of the author remains unknown. Interestingly, the final sentence announces a sequel: "Näher darüber in unseren zukünftigen moralischen Untersuchungen, wo wir für das Ens Entium einen begreiflicheren Gott wieder finden werden."CONDITION: Very good or better in contemporary plain boards with minimal spotting, edges untrimmed. Paperback. Condition: Used: Good. Allen Ginsberg's signature is on pre-title page with note and date: I wrote this book 9/5/93; The book is in less than standard condition, I used it in college; I have markings throughout; I have applied clear tape to prevent the spine from going any further than it was already going. But it does have Ginsberg's signature which I acquired when I chased him up Second avenue on the west side of the street, catching him at between 3rd and 4th Streets; He was quite gracious and quipped that he had written this book, which I already knew. I of course knew everything at the time. I shall include my syllabus just in case you wish to do the college course yourself without Prof. Charles Sherover.
