Folio (204 x 325 mm). 161 (instead of 220) hand-numbered woodcut plates in early 18th-century colour, mounted on backing paper and missing parts supplemented by hand. Later half calf with 18th-c. spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the Emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Also includes the famous picture of the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians: a man with a crown and belt of feathers, a knife, and a bow and arrow, beside a long-haired woman carrying a baby in a knotted sling. The illustration is an adaptation of two cuts from the "Recueil de la diversité des habits" (Paris, 1562; Antwerp, 1572) by Francois Descerpz, "one of the first likenesses of the Brazilian Indian" (Borba de Moraes). - Title page shows Jakob Linckh's autograph ownership (dated 1825); somewhat later stamped ownership of Anton Franzin (possibly the like-named Tyrolean law clerk, ca. 1840) to flyleaf. - VD 16, W 1487 (BSB copy incomplete). Lipperheide 7-8 (both copies incomplete). Andresen I, 234. Becker 140. Borba de Moraes II, 373f. Maggs, Bibl. Americana 1-214 ("This book is excessively rare in a complete state").

In 1950, the World Congress of the Supporters of Peace adopted a permanent constitution for the World Peace Council, which replaced the Committee of Partisans for Peace. The opening congress of the WPC condemned the atom-bomb and the American invasion of Korea. It followed the Cominform line, recommending the creation of national peace committees in every country, and rejected pacifism and the non-aligned peace movement. It was originally scheduled for Sheffield but the British authorities, who wished to undermine the WPC, refused visas to many delegates and the Congress was forced to move to Warsaw. British Prime Minister Clement Attlee denounced the Congress as a "bogus forum of peace with the real aim of sabotaging national defence" and said there would be a "reasonable limit" on foreign delegates. .

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. pp. [ii], 46.Signatures: A-F⁴ Roman letter, some Italic. Woodcut headpiece and initial, contemporary autograph scribbled over on title, purchase note August 1722 Laban at head, Ex libris B. K. T. Pagel inked to label on pastedown. Light browning, title and first few leaves dusty with light waterstain at head, early repair to small hole in inner blank margin of title, the odd marginal spot or mark. A good copy in three quarter calf over marbled boards circa 1900. Rare first edition of this translation into English of this important spiritual work that was to have tremendous influence in England in Theosophist circles in the C19th, especially after it was reprinted with a commentary by Anna Kingsford in 1886. Valentin Weigel (1553-1588) was a mystical writer who drew upon Paracelsist and alchemical ideas. His ideas influenced Jacob Boehme, and other German Protestant mystics of the 17th century. Most of his writings were published after his death, when a small group of Weigelians promoted his ideas, and some texts were issued in his name, pseudonymously. This is the only one of his works that was published in English. ESTC assigns the work to Valentine Wiegel, with the note "German or Latin original, if any, not traced It is, however, uncertain whether it was written by Weigel himself. The text was first printed anonymously in 1617 under the title: Astrologia Theologizata, The following year a German translation was printed under Weigel's name as the second part of the Gnothi Seauton . There is no manuscript tradition associated with this text before c.1620, long after Weigel's death in 1588. But whether written by Weigel, or later by one of his school, it is a good illustration of the way in which mystically inclined Christians of that period, inspired by Weigel, endeavoured to make spiritual conquest of the prevailing Astrology. The Saxon Lutheran pastor Valentin Weigel (1533 1588) was marked by modern scholars as a mystic, a theosopher, or a Paracelsian. Despite the inspiration he drew from Paracelsus and his natural philosophy, nevertheless, his interests in nature were rather limited. He was no physician, no astronomer and no alchemist . alchemical themes appear only marginally in his works. Obviously, he is interested in theological topics for the most part. However, his followers allegedly built him a tombstone with alchemical symbols, and some alchemical works were later published under his name. By the end of the 17th century, he is mentioned as one of the figures in the uninterrupted chain of German adepts who reaped the golden harvest , . Such a reputation could be established largely due to pseudonymous texts that together with Weigel s authentic works began to spread in print editions after 1609, arousing considerable interest, both positive and negative. . As a heir of the German Mysticism translated in the language of the Reformation, and a disseminator of some concepts of Paracelsus (esp. his concept of two lights or man as microcosm), Weigel could create a general philosophical-theological and epistemological framework suitable also for alchemy. Generally, Weigel s basic concern is man s relationship to God. He draws on Paracelsus (1493 1541) , Ficino s (1433 1499), and Pico della Mirandola s (1463 1494) ideas of man as a microcosm containing in himself everything: the earthly (elemental and astral), the heavenly, and also the divine. Therefore, the primary issue is self-knowledge: it enables us to see that we are a unity of these layers and to ponder the implications this has for us. Similarly, to know God means to know man and to understand the nature of the world. For some, he was a theosophist and alchemist, aiming not at the transmutation of metals, but at the transformation and rebirth of man. His critics connected his ideas with Rosicrucianism . Martin emla Valentin Weigel and alchemy . Wing W1255. Thomason, E.562[14]. Thorndike VII p. 94. Gardner 1273.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Nuremberg: (circa 1690-1700). 4to (240 x 195mm). 101 leaves. Engraved title-page and 100 numbered copperplate engraved emblems by father and son engravers Jan and Caspar Luyken (or Luiken). Each emblem is printed on rectos and accompanied by a ten-line Latin verse in letterpress. Original blue paper wrappers, edges uncut; (edges lightly browned and some light marginal foxing, spine chipped with loss, but overall still very good). Ex Libris of William S. Heckscher (bookplate to front pastedown). First edition of Christoph Weigel s Ethica naturalis; his summation of biblical ethics in moralistic prints and etchings. Christoph Weigel (the Elder) was a German engraver, art dealer and publisher. He was known to collaborate with the father and son engravers from Nurembeg, Luyken, to create masterfully engraved books. An engraver himself, Weigel is perhaps best known for his work in atlases, world geography, and universal histories. In this moralistic work, the Luyken team created striking designs of natural elements, animals, and aspects of the human condition to emphasize proverbial messages. This work sought to capture the social organization of mankind through expert engravings; they are classic examples of quality German Baroque printmaking. This copy belonged to prominent twentieth century German art historian William S. Heckscher (1904-1999), who wrote on emblem books and published the major work Reallexicon zu deutschen Kunstgeschichte, where he classified Weigel s book as one of the encyclopedic works to follow in the footsteps of Andrea Alciato. Notably, it was Hecksher s claim that Jan Luyken was one of the best emblem artists of all time. Very rarely complete in this original condition. Landwehr, German 639; Praz p. 533.
