The article interprets the so-called “Eucharistic section” in John 6:51–58 in the context of early Christian text on the Eucharist, especially Ignatius and Justin, but also Irenaeus and the Gospel of Philip. It interprets the Eucharist as a ritual by which, according to early Christian texts, canonical and non-canonical, the believers gain eternal life though their participation in Christ.

During the pandemic of the coronavirus, two tendencies related to the increasing digitization of everyday life have emerged in contemporary Russian and adjacent Ukrainian Orthodoxy: first, the greatly multiplied fear of total control over individuals by the state and transnational corporations – the fear of „digital Antichrist“ – and second, the controversy over the possibility of a digital Eucharist. The latter, in turn, seems to be accepted only in the form of a hybrid communion, combining offline pre-sanctified gifts, delivered in advance to parishioners, with their subsequent participation in prayer in the live online liturgy. However, the digital consecration of bread and wine in front of a computer screen is seen not just as theologically questionable, but rather as a profanation of the main Christian sacrament.

This article is a critical engagement with D. Stăniloae’s and J. Ratzinger’s ecclesiological thought as shaped by the description of church as the body of Christ and the Trinitarian roots of this ecclesiology. Starting from practical problems of prayer and living a Christian life, the authors argue that God’s relationship to the Christian community has primacy over God’s relationship to individual believers. When one conceives of the Christian community as being the body of Christ, one can uphold the elevated Christian ideal of Eucharist Communio without making it unattainable. The authors show that the being of the church is given to the Christian community not as a possession or property, but as a task to be fulfilled through the power of Christ and of the Holy Spirit. One can discover that in becoming the church, the Christian community is elevated to the Trinitarian life in communion. Communion ecclesiology has the potential to bridge the divide between the Orthodox and Catholic churches.
