2021, Der Umwelt begegnen. Extremereignisse und die Verflechtung von Natur und Kultur im Frankenreich vom 8. bis 10. Jahrhundert
English Title "Encountering the Environment. Extreme Events and the Entanglement of Nature and Culture in the Frankish Realm from the 8th to the 10th Century CE". The study deals with the interrelation of nature and culture in historical processes. It aims to understand how early medieval societies encountered their social and biophysical environment in six cases from the eighth to the tenth century. Extreme events were chosen as a starting point and identified both via palaeoclimatological reconstructions and the written historical record. Using concepts of vulnerability and resilience, as well as theories from the fields of sociology and environmental history, it develops a model that takes into account both anthropogenic and biophysical events: "Environmental History of Processed Reality". The perception and interpretation of these events was chosen as a decisive element for understanding how societies dealt with extreme events and processed them in cultural terms in the Early Middle Ages. This made it possible to analyse the negotiation processes in terms of coping strategies more precisely and ask what knowledge was available, what explanations were chosen, and what actions were taken.
Umweltkonflikte und Nachhaltigkeit in Lateina- merika beleuchtet Nachhaltigkeitskonflikte in ver- schiedenen Regionen und die daran geknüpften Ver- handlungen unterschiedlicher Akteure. Neun Fall- studien porträtieren präzise die Ausgangssituation und analysieren Verhandlungsgegenstand, Ver- handlungsparteien und Verhandlungsstrategien: Internationale Konzerne befinden sich im Konflikt mit indigenen Gemeinschaften um Landeigentum, Regierungen im Grenzstreit um effektive Verbre- chensbekämpfung, Bürgermeister stehen in Aus- einandersetzung mit Unternehmensvereinigungen über die Einführung eines neuen öffentlichen Nah- verkehrs. Die vielseitigen Fälle stehen Modell, wie mit Hilfe der Verhandlungsführung komplexe Kon- flikte in Ländern des Globalen Südens unter Einbe- ziehung relevanter Akteure überwunden und bewäl- tigt werden können.

Sozial-ökologische Exkursion "Plastik in der Umwelt"2020 •
Der vorliegende Bericht dokumentiert die Ergebnisse einer sozial-ökologischen Exkursion nach Norddeutschland, die im Juni 2019 im Rahmen einer Lehrveranstaltung des ISOE - Institut für sozial-ökologische Forschung mit Studierenden aus unterschiedlichen natur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen der Goethe Universität Frankfurt stattfand. Im Fokus der Exkursion stand das Problem „Plastik in der Umwelt", welches interdisziplinär untersucht wurde. So analysierten die Teilnehmer*innen zum einen die gesellschaftliche Nutzung von Kunststoffen inklusive Fragen der Produktion und Entsorgung, zum anderen betrachteten sie die ökologischen Folgen der Kunststoffverwendung. Dabei wurde ein Schwerpunkt auf die Interessen, Perspektiven und das Problemverständnis verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Akteure gelegt. Neben der eigenen Datenerhebung erhielten die Exkursionsteilnehmer*innen einen Einblick in Forschungsinstitute (Meeresbiologie, Nachhaltigkeit), Umwelt-NGOs, Abfallmanagement, Verpackungsunternehmen sowie Abwasserbehandlung und lernten die Besonderheiten des Küstenökosystems kennen. Ziel war, disziplinübergreifend sowohl ökologische Aspekte als auch gesellschaftliche Prozesse sowie deren Wechselwirkungen näher zu betrachten, die interdisziplinäre Kompetenz der Studierenden zu stärken und einen Zugang zur sozial-ökologischen Problemanalyse zu schaffen. The report at hand documents the results of a social-ecological field trip to Northern Germany which took place in June 2019 as part of a university course given by ISOE - Institute for Social-Ecological Research at the Goethe University of Frankfurt. Participants were students from natural and social sciences. The field trip focused on the problem of "plastics in the environment" which was investigated interdisciplinarily. On the one hand, the students analyzed the societal use of plastics and dealt with questions concerning production and disposal, and on the other hand, they investigated the ecological consequences. Here, the interests, perspectives and the problem understanding of various societal actors were particularly taken into account. In addition to gathering their own data, the participants got on-site information about research institutes (marine biology, sustainability) packaging companies andenvironmental NGOs. They were thus able to get first-hand information on waste management, waste water treatment, and the characteristics of the coastal ecosystem. The overall objective was to take a closer look at ecological aspects and social processes and their interactions across disciplines with the aim to strengthen the interdisciplinary competence of the students and to create access to social-ecological problem analysis.
