Jahrhundert
English Title "Encountering the Environment. Extreme Events and the Entanglement of Nature and Culture in the Frankish Realm from the 8th to the 10th Century CE". The study deals with the interrelation of nature and culture in historical processes. It aims to understand how early medieval societies encountered their social and biophysical environment in six cases from the eighth to the tenth century. Extreme events were chosen as a starting point and identified both via palaeoclimatological reconstructions and the written historical record. Using concepts of vulnerability and resilience, as well as theories from the fields of sociology and environmental history, it develops a model that takes into account both anthropogenic and biophysical events: "Environmental History of Processed Reality". The perception and interpretation of these events was chosen as a decisive element for understanding how societies dealt with extreme events and processed them in cultural terms in the Early Middle Ages. This made it possible to analyse the negotiation processes in terms of coping strategies more precisely and ask what knowledge was available, what explanations were chosen, and what actions were taken.

The report at hand documents the results of a social-ecological field trip to Northern Germany which took place in June 2019 as part of a university course given by ISOE - Institute for Social-Ecological Research at the Goethe University of Frankfurt. Participants were students from natural and social sciences. The field trip focused on the problem of "plastics in the environment" which was investigated interdisciplinarily. On the one hand, the students analyzed the societal use of plastics and dealt with questions concerning production and disposal, and on the other hand, they investigated the ecological consequences. Here, the interests, perspectives and the problem understanding of various societal actors were particularly taken into account. In addition to gathering their own data, the participants got on-site information about research institutes (marine biology, sustainability) packaging companies andenvironmental NGOs. They were thus able to get first-hand information on waste management, waste water treatment, and the characteristics of the coastal ecosystem. The overall objective was to take a closer look at ecological aspects and social processes and their interactions across disciplines with the aim to strengthen the interdisciplinary competence of the students and to create access to social-ecological problem analysis.
