Seit einem Jahrhundert zieht die Wagenburg in Schonbrunn mit ihrer Sammlung prachtiger Wagen des Wiener Hofes Besucher aus aller Welt in ihren Bann. Die bewegte Geschichte dieses Marstallmuseums ist nicht nur auf das Engste an die osterreichische Zeitgeschichte geknupft, sondern verdeutlich auch, wie sehr sich die Institution Museum in den letzten hundert Jahren gewandelt hat. Am 9. September 1922 wurde die Wagenburg in der ehemaligen Winterreitschule von Schonbrunn feierlich eroffnet. Seither werden dort die historischen Bestande des kaiserlichen Hofmarstalls prasentiert, die dem Kunsthistorische Museum 1921 uberantwortet worden sind. Dabei handelt es sich nicht nur um den besterhaltenen hofischen Fuhrpark des 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern auch um einen einzigartigen Bestand historischer Zuggeschirre, Reitzeuge und Gemalde. Mario Doberl legt anlasslich des 100-Jahr-Jubilaums nun die erste umfassende Geschichte der Wagenburg vor. Dabei blickt er auch auf die Zeit vor ihrer Eroffnung zuruck, als die Marstallobjekte bereits in den ehemaligen Hofstallungen im heutigen Museumsquartier in Form einer pramusealen Aufstellung besichtigt werden konnten. Aufgelockert wird die chronologische Struktur durch mehrere historische Langsschnitte zu Themen wie Schadlingsbekampfung oder Hofkutschen im Film, durch essayistische Exkurse, etwa zum Geruch des Museums oder zum Wandel der Mentalitaten und Regeln, durch Fallgeschichten sowie durch Zeitzeugeninterviews.
