Product Description

As part of the celebrations of pianist Alfred Brendel's 85th birthday, his collected Mozart solo recordings are presented for the first time on 7 CDs, featuring the Mozart Piano Sonatas he recorded between 1975 and 2008, along with other solo piano works. Included are multiple recordings of several of the works (Sonatas 4, 8, and 11), offering the chance to explore and contrast this thoughtful pianist's more recent interpretations.

Review

Among the composers I conduct, Bruckner is one of the top five I would not give up for anything. --Riccardo Chailly

The combination of the Concertgebouw and Decca s engineering is a beguiling one and the present production is a characteristic success. --Gramophone

New details can be heard as layer upon layer of sound is rolled out in front of you…If you want to be moved by its emotional warmth and not just its size and impact, you ought to hear Chailly. --Andrew McGregor - BBC RADIO 3

I think this is one of the best Bruckner cycles available on CD, competitive with those by Haitink, Barenboim, Jochum, Wand (both cycles), the first Celibidache, Skrowaczewski, far superior to Tintner, and not far behind Karajan, whose cycle is the desert island choice. (Celibidache's Munich recordings are a bete noire for me, the perversely slow tempi thrusting the conductor between the listener and the composer in much the same way as Boulez does in his abortive attempt to demythologize PARSIFAL at Bayreuth.)

Chailly's interpretations of the Fourth and Ninth symphonies are the high points of the set for me, but all of the music is played with consummate skill and taste and it's easy to see why many think the Concertgebouw is the orchestra of choice for Bruckner, even more for Chailly than Haitink.

The bargain price is the final point that makes this set a necessary purchase for anyone who loves Bruckner. Five stars without qualification, my only minor complaint being the absence of a booklet of any kind to provide basic information about the conductor and the versions chosen.

I only just now had the chance to sit and enjoy the 1st Symphony. Totally blown away. My Klipsch Forte IVs ate this up. The Dynamic range from intimate to explosive left me speechless. It's snowing outside. I am not going anywhere. Me and Maestro Chailly have some work to do. Thanks Decca.

FOR SOME REASON ..MAYBE I THOUGHT BRUCKNER WAS A NAZI BECAUSE HE WAS HITLER'S FAVORITE
COMPOSER...EQUAL TO HIS BELOVED WAGNER..SO I NEVER LISTENED TO OR PURCHASED HIS MUSIC..
IN REALITY BRUCKNER DIED MANY YEARS PRIOR TO HITLER...AND LIVED A QUIET LIFE
BUT THE MUSIC IS A REVELATION ..HIS SYMPHONIES ARE DRAMATIC AND STIRRING AND THE CLOSEST
COMPOSER HE SOUNDS LIKE IS BERLIOZ...THE MUSIC IS OPERA ETIC AND ALWAYS INTERESTING

This is a very good set of Bruckner symphonies. All that is missing is the "00".
Included is the overture in G.

I am not one of those audiophiles who can comment on classical music based on sound quality. Nor am I an expert on performances.... which conductor is better, etc. What I can say is that this is majestic, beautiful, expansive music. A great set at a good price.

lots of wonderful, grand performances. seems that chailly emphasizes the raw power of bruckner. not 'spriritual' like some bruckner lovers appreciate. but different. listening now to the first movement of the 3rd. a blazing performance. shock and awe would describe it. the second movement has a more human, personal touch to it, not overly brooding. sound is wonderful. and the price--ten stars fantastic.

The Fourth and the Seventh are my favorites. There are enjoyable portions of music through the set, but none of the others is as impressive as these two.

Wonderful sound but Decca can’t be asked to invest in cardboard that’s minimally protective of the CDs. Mine arrived crushed.

5.0 out of 5 stars "a thing of wonder"

This is how Bernard Haitink referred to the 7th symphony.
Under Chailly and with magnificent playing and recording one is left thinking that this is true of each and every moment, movement and symphony.
This is pure Bruckner for Brucknerians - at a bargain price.
Chailly's deep, empathetic understanding of these wonderful scores, his conducting, the playing and recording all play their parts in these powerful performances that pull you into all the utter glories of Bruckner's spellbinding orchestration - which I have heard and appreciated in these readings with a clarity that I have never heard before.
After nearly 50 years listening to Bruckner I have a pretty broad church approach....which at its extremes encompasses Furtwängler* and Celibedache , and includes Haitink and many others - all of which I would not want to be without....
As a reviewer in Gramophone mentioned some of these performances won't grab you at first listening but as you follow Chailly on these unique musical journeys ......you'll be rewarded hugely.
Their poise, pacing, and gentle mobility along with a superb sense of 'paragraphing', partly due to telling micro pauses...
and yes, you arrive with great power atop the mountains from which such vistas are opened !
Deeply moving, deeply involving.
I felt compelled to review this set as if, like me, you don't readily pair Bruckner with Chailly I feel you will once you've absorbed these discs.
Outstanding.
I suspect if pushed to only be allowed one cycle - heaven forbid - it may well be this one.
Do not go without !
* If you don't know Furtwängler / Bruckner then I would I recommend this set of 4 - 9. It is witness to an approach to Bruckner which I fear we may have lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently engaging recordings, good sound engineering and a lovely listening experience

Like many of the vocal fans of Bruckner's symphonies, I have come to appreciate the diversity that is available. Let it suffice to say that I was also sucked into the vortex created by these choices. Rather than provide my biased opinion about the different recordings, I would like to focus only on this box set.

Having listened to this set in a short space of time, I was struck by the consistent quality of the performances, good sound engineering and engaging interpretation of Bruckner's work by Riccardo Chailly. For those that have not yet succumbed to the temptation to own several recordings, I can recommend this as a good first set to buy. Based on price and quality I would recommend this over the other offerings. The box set includes ten symphonies. It does not include Symphony 00 in F minor, but on the positive side, many other box sets do not even include Symphony 0 in D minor (or the Overture in G minor). The only downside of this box set is that it does not come with a booklet.

If you already know that you prefer the style of a different conductor, this may still be a good first choice for the set of symphonies. Most Bruckner 'addicts' will be quick to point out other favorites when it comes to individual symphonies. I will too (although some recordings in this set would be on that list). However, this is a box set and it has to be judged as a collection. As a collection this box set makes for very enjoyable listening and it is an excellent introduction for those that want to explore the Bruckner symphonies for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein geschmeidiger Riese
Reviewed in Germany on February 21, 2016

- Sinfonie Nr. 1 [Wiener Fassung, 1890-91], Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, 1987
- Sinfonie Nr. 2 [Edition Haas], Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1991
- Sinfonie Nr. 3 [1889], Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, 1985
- Sinfonie Nr. 4 "Romantische" [Edition Nowak], Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1988
- Sinfonie Nr. 5 [Edition Haas], Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1991
- Sinfonie Nr. 6 [Edition Nowak], Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1997
- Sinfonie Nr. 7, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, 1984
- Sinfonie Nr. 8 [Edition Nowak], Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1999
- Sinfonie Nr. 9, Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1996
