Like one of the other reviewers, I didn't even know what the word Dysthymia meant, but now that I've read the book, I recognize the symptoms in one of my family members. I loved the listing method in the last part of the book. It is a terrific way to get rid of the disorder without resorting to professional help. Whenever any of us can take a moment to reflect on the good things in our life that we should be thankful for, we find that just doing the exercise has the ability to lift our spirits.

Bryan James does a nice job of writing where anyone can readily understand what he is talking about. He writes in a straight forward style that makes it a pleasure to read information that could be really boring. If you want to get the facts about this disorder, buy this book; you won't be disappointed.

I would not recommend this book. All of the information given is very superficial. The author doesn't establish his background nor experience to be able to write about this topic. And he states "studies show..." but doesn't include references to any specific studies.

As a person who has suffered with this disease for almost 20 years now, I have to say this was not very helpful. I appreciate it being short and to the point, and the definitions and information in the beginning is useful, but tricking your mind into not suffering from a disease is not a real thing. As a person who has been successful, has a decent life, and is thankful for the things and people I have, I know there is not necessarily a "cure" that works for everyone. However, I will say, if you have never tried some of these things, give it a go! You never know it might help you feel better.

I was quite happy to learn how the author gets to the root causes of Dysthymia. It was interesting to learn that it differs from depression. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book and found them quite helpful. The author breaks things down rather simply. After identifying causes of internal and external factors he goes on to send the reader a message of hope. There is no need to cover problems in a pill when simple things in his book can change your life.

It is short and to the point. I keep rereading it. I will probably order a hard copy and encourage others to read it.

Except the opening chapters, this book is useless if you are struggling with dysthymia. It's full of simple advices I've already heard and read. I don't recomend it.

It starts off with a quick summary of the symptoms and potential causes for dysthymia. The usual mirror that's always helpful to read. It continues with chapters that IMO go terribly wrong, suggesting to just smile everything away. The author assumes too much about the reader (e.g. having a house and a job) and does not acknowledge the potential challenges someone might go through. I did not google the author but it seemed to me as if this person scribbled down what worked for him and presented it as the cure that has to work for everyone. While his suggestions for mood lifting actions contain components that are key, it is his style of putting them forward that is not very inviting.
