Enchiridion Symbolorum: A Compendium of Creeds, Definitions and Declarations of the Catholic Church Hardcover – October 9, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Edited by Peter Hunermann, Ph.D
New, Updated Edition-Latin and English
This compendium of theological-historical source texts, in a bilingual edition, is completely revised and extended to the pontificate of Benedict XVI. With its unique wealth of official church documents and sources, it is an essential resource for theological work.
Since its first edition in 1854, "Denzinger" has become a standard work and an indispensable tool for serious theological work. It faithfully reflects the history of the Church's faith and its development over the centuries. Indeed, its reference system has become an established part of citing important theological sources.
Peter Hünermann has updated the texts of this compendium and he has provided each text with an introduction. The original language and the English translation are presented in two columns so readers can refer to the original text, while deepening their understanding through the introductions, notes, and reliable English translation.
The final section of the volume features indexes, including a detailed systematic index to aid locating texts on specific themes. The revised, expanded edition of "Denzinger", with its text-critical editing, is a necessary part of any up-to-date theological library.

I heard of Denzinger by listening to R.C. Sproul, who is a Reformed Minister and leader of Ligonier Ministries in Florida. His podcast is called, "Renewing Your Mind." Ligonier also publishes a monthly Bible study magazine called, "Tabletalk."
This edition contains documents up through Dignitas personae (2008) in both original languages and English. The pages are large and thin (Bible paper) with two-column layout. This edition is missing the occasional critical notes about textual variants which the DS has. There are historical introductions, footnotes, and a series of indices (including a good systematic index).
The helpful introduction to this edition explains clearly its organization, history, and the choices that were made in editing and translating it.
The doctrinal portions of documents from Vatican II are included.
As far as I can ascertain, what is contained in the DS 36th edition is almost completely present in this edition. The numbering is mostly (though not completely) consistent with the DS 36th edition.
This edition conveniently has a ribbon attached to the spine.
Drawbacks:
The indices (e.g., the Index of Persons and Subjects) are almost completely in English. I don't consider this a serious disadvantage, but it could prove to be an occasional inconvenience.
The paper is thin, so it is occasionally a bit hard to read because of the text showing through to the other side. Again, a minor inconvenience at worst.

(1) It excises the previously included thunderous denunciation of Pope Pius IX of religious liberty in his Encyclical Quanta Cura (1864): 'that erroneous opinion, most fatal in its effects on the Catholic Church and the salvation of souls, called by Our Predecessor Gregory XVI an "insanity" ... "a liberty of perdition".'
(2) It adds forged letters 'proving' that Pope Liberius committed heresy by siding with the Arians and excommunicating St Athanasius - abominable fabrications that have long since been disproved.
(3) About a third of the book is given over to the teachings of Antipopes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI, including copious selections from the documents of Anticouncil Vatican II.
That said, it is a very useful reference work, and I don't regret for a moment purchasing it.
