Edited by Peter Hunermann, Ph.D

New, Updated Edition-Latin and English

This compendium of theological-historical source texts, in a bilingual edition, is completely revised and extended to the pontificate of Benedict XVI. With its unique wealth of official church documents and sources, it is an essential resource for theological work.

Since its first edition in 1854, "Denzinger" has become a standard work and an indispensable tool for serious theological work. It faithfully reflects the history of the Church's faith and its development over the centuries. Indeed, its reference system has become an established part of citing important theological sources.

Peter Hünermann has updated the texts of this compendium and he has provided each text with an introduction. The original language and the English translation are presented in two columns so readers can refer to the original text, while deepening their understanding through the introductions, notes, and reliable English translation.

The final section of the volume features indexes, including a detailed systematic index to aid locating texts on specific themes. The revised, expanded edition of "Denzinger", with its text-critical editing, is a necessary part of any up-to-date theological library.

A must have!
One of the best references there is in studying and understanding the history of our Holy Mother Church through its early fathers’ letters, the first councils that truly defined what it is to be a catholic and a follower of Christ. In this time of uncertainty and division, a book such as this will give us a deeper enlightenment on what it is to be a real Catholic. One of the best book I have! Need not say more to convince a Christian esp. a Roman Catholic to get one of this.Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi!

This is a high-quality binding with equal quality pages. The pages/binding will not wear down with repeat usage. As for the content, it is clearly organized and relatively user-friendly once one spends some time exploring the structure and organization of the content (as one would expect with a 43rd edition).

This is an excellent classic. The fact that the book is in its 43rd edition is testimony enough of its enduring appeal and value

I approach church history from a Reformed Christian perspective (i.e. Reformation). I love reading about church history. If one reads about church history, then Denzinger is a fascinating way to explore the documents of theology from the Early Christian Church through the Medieval and Post-Reformation Roman Catholic Church. This edition is fantastic, as it contains the original language and the English side-by-side. One should read it with a critical lexicon to make it pop. To really make it pop, have Denzinger next to you while reading "The Christian Tradition," by Jaroslav Pelikan, "2,000 Years of Christ's Power," by Nicholas Needham, "The History of the Christian Church," by Philip Schaff, etc. When the historians reference the primary sources (at least the of the Early Christian Church and Roman Catholic Church), you are likely to be able to look them up in Denzinger!

I heard of Denzinger by listening to R.C. Sproul, who is a Reformed Minister and leader of Ligonier Ministries in Florida. His podcast is called, "Renewing Your Mind." Ligonier also publishes a monthly Bible study magazine called, "Tabletalk."

I relied on the Denzinger-Schonmetzer 36th edition for years while waiting for this edition to come out, and I am overjoyed to see it arrive at last.

This edition contains documents up through Dignitas personae (2008) in both original languages and English. The pages are large and thin (Bible paper) with two-column layout. This edition is missing the occasional critical notes about textual variants which the DS has. There are historical introductions, footnotes, and a series of indices (including a good systematic index).

The helpful introduction to this edition explains clearly its organization, history, and the choices that were made in editing and translating it.

The doctrinal portions of documents from Vatican II are included.

As far as I can ascertain, what is contained in the DS 36th edition is almost completely present in this edition. The numbering is mostly (though not completely) consistent with the DS 36th edition.

This edition conveniently has a ribbon attached to the spine.

Drawbacks:

The indices (e.g., the Index of Persons and Subjects) are almost completely in English. I don't consider this a serious disadvantage, but it could prove to be an occasional inconvenience.

The paper is thin, so it is occasionally a bit hard to read because of the text showing through to the other side. Again, a minor inconvenience at worst.

I love this new edition of the Denzinger. The material is good. However, on a few pages, it is clear something went wrong with the printing or trimming, because there are some weirdly cut page corners. However, it never interferes with the content. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to delve a bit more into theology. Remember to read the preface and introduction!

A well-produced volume containing both Latin and English. However, this is not a Catholic edition of Denzinger, the last edition of which was produced in 1954 under the reign of Pius XII. Rather it is the latest edition of the Vatican II sect. That's why it makes a number of very significant changes. For example:

(1) It excises the previously included thunderous denunciation of Pope Pius IX of religious liberty in his Encyclical Quanta Cura (1864): 'that erroneous opinion, most fatal in its effects on the Catholic Church and the salvation of souls, called by Our Predecessor Gregory XVI an "insanity" ... "a liberty of perdition".'

(2) It adds forged letters 'proving' that Pope Liberius committed heresy by siding with the Arians and excommunicating St Athanasius - abominable fabrications that have long since been disproved.

(3) About a third of the book is given over to the teachings of Antipopes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI, including copious selections from the documents of Anticouncil Vatican II.

That said, it is a very useful reference work, and I don't regret for a moment purchasing it.
