Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024
I am a tenured professor and have taught for 30 years. I adopted multiple editions of this book for a sport governance course--mostly because there are few other textbook options. The book reads like a college senior's thesis literature review, cobbling together information from various sources and citing it with in-text citations. The writing is awkward and stilted at times. There is little attempt to create an overarching understanding of the nature of governance or synthesize the literature into a coherent narrative.

The text overwhelms with detailed information but leaves out essential definitions. For example, in the chapter on professional team sports, the authors give us lists of the names of over a dozen front office units for each two professional teams. A table or set of org charts would be more effective to illustrate that most professional sports teams have offices that perform similar functions.

In the same chapter there is no definition of "Collective Bargaining Agreement", an essential concept to professional team sports. Most self respecting textbooks highlight key terms and link them to a sidebar or glossary. This textbook has neither.

Hums has been the lead author of this book through multiple editions. In more recent editions, younger co-authors have received credit. I hope these new authors will give this work a thorough revision and rewriting. The topic deserves a more readable and serviceable text.
