Step into the hidden world of elite warriors—Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Air Force PJs, Marine Raiders, etc.—who are haunted by a unique constellation of injuries, born out of years, even decades, of fighting the Global War on Terror. Operator Syndrome identifies and describes the profound impact that years of extreme sacrifice have had on our military special operators and their loved ones.

Drawing upon his thirty years of experience with clinical trials, historical epidemiology, and neuroscience research—as well as a decade of applied efforts with special operators across all branches of the U.S. military—acclaimed clinical psychologist Chris Frueh, Ph.D., uncovers a pattern of interrelated afflictions: traumatic brain injury, hormonal dysregulation, sleep apnea, chronic pain, depression, anger, insomnia, addiction, existential angst, and more.

Dr. Frueh guides us through the harrowing terrain of Operator Syndrome. He provides a roadmap to understand its multifaceted origins and complex effects on every biological system in the body—as well as the social systems of family, work, and the indifferent society these warriors return to. He explains how modern healthcare systems, especially Veterans Affairs, have too often relied on the PTSD “easy button” and failed a generation of men and women who have carried the brunt of the fight since 9/11.

Frueh shines a bright and empathic light on the silent struggles of a community with a “never quit” mindset. Most importantly, he provides real solutions, lifestyle adaptations, and step-by-step treatment strategies that have worked for hundreds of operators, saving lives and giving hope to families.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dr. Frueh’s contribution to the health and mental health of military special operators is outstanding, timely, and much needed. This work is what every operator, family member, and provider needs to read. This creates a common language and resource that moves the field forward.”

Gabrielle Lyon, D.O., U.S. Navy SEAL spouse, functional medicine practitioner, author of Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well

“Dr. Frueh provides a framework that gave us hope and a path forward. I am forever grateful for the work he has done for special operators and their families with Operator Syndrome.”

Andrea Gallagher, U.S. Navy SEAL spouse, co-author of The Man in the Arena, president of The Pipe Hitter Foundation

Operator Syndrome lays it all out to be understood. I spent twenty-five years in the Army with twenty-one being in Special Operations. Frueh’s work is spot on and describes the issues most of our Special Operations warrior families are facing.”

Tom Satterly, U.S. Army (Ret.), Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Special Forces, CEO/co-founder of All Secure Foundation, author of All Secure: A Special Operations Soldier’s Fight to Survive on the Battlefield and the Homefront

“For a comprehensive insight into veteran trauma and associated physiological injuries, Dr. Frueh’s work is an invaluable resource. This book is a must-read for anyone adjacent to or in the veteran space.”

Jesse Gould, former U.S. Army Ranger, founder of Heroic Hearts Project

“If knowledge is power, then Operator Syndrome by Dr. Frueh is an atomic bomb. Much of my frustration, anger, and confusion as a spouse came from a lack of understanding the complexities of the issues my husband faced after serving in an elite Special Operations unit for twenty years. We both felt lost in the fog of PTSD until we were armed with the knowledge that this injury can be healed.”

Jen Satterly, U.S. Army Special Forces spouse, CEO/co-founder of All Secure Foundation

“Dr. Frueh’s efforts have transformed our understanding of the complex, interrelated medical-psychological injuries faced by military special operators. Every combatant of the Global War on Terrorism, and their family members, should read Operator Syndrome.”

Mike Sarraille, U.S. Navy SEAL (ret.), former U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper, and CEO of Talent War Group

The cost of being elite
I am a special forces veteran, a minister, a chaplain, and a counselor. I see not only the practicality and usefulness of this book as a SOF veteran, but also from a counseling perspective. When I left the service, I was plagued with a variety of different issues. Even though my experience with the VA has been better than most, there has always been a disconnect in their understanding. Most of them just do not have the training and experience in understanding the level of stress and pressure that was put on my body for such a long period of time, which included multiple combat deployments back-to-back.When I heard of the term coined "Operator Syndrome" several years ago, and began to look into it, it brought me a lot of relief. I was blessed to see that there are people within the healthcare community that recognize the impact that the high tempo lifestyle places on the brain and body for our nation's elite soldiers. To quote something from the introduction of this book, "At the same time, however, relatively few of us understand the massive 'dose' of allostatic load they have shouldered for our benefit as Americans. Few understand the depth, complexity, and intensity, both physical and mental, of their sacrifices, involving brain, body, and soul. Most people cannot imagine it" (page 9).One of the things I admire about this book is that it includes practical things that the SOF veteran can do to help in certain categories. The provided picture shows a section on sleep. If you are a SOF veteran, a spouse, or a healthcare professional, you need to read, study, and work this book. It will provide a tremendous amount of insight into the state of the special operations community and you will be better equipped to help them.If you are active-duty SOF, you need to read this book with your spouse/family support system. You are not alone. #DOL

If you are a spouse or operator, you will find peace knowing you (or your loved one) is not alone. Our strongest and most selfless warriors can survive several deployments but they do not come home unscathed. From training to missions, every bit of exposure has an impact on their brain, the silent injuries. Chris and his team have brought to light some of the latest research and proven treatment for Operator Syndrome. I urge you to buy this book and pass it along to everyone in your community.
As a medical professional and a spouse… I can promise you I will be sending this book to everyone I know! If you are a medical professional, especially involved in military or veteran care, you may just find the answers you’ve been praying for to help your “untreatable” patients.
Operators… you are never alone! Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed! Thank you

Operator Syndrome is one of overlapping symptoms of various etiologies that impact physical, psychological, psychosocial and other domains of health. This book creates awareness of the most crucial findings that are consequences of many service related issues that many have had significant difficulty in realizing and resolving.

I am an MSW and Doctoral student, working primarily with veterans with PTSD. I’ve found that many of my clients have low testosterone and are suffering greatly from it, but no one seems to put much emphasis on this. To see this given proper attention so early on in the book made me feel validated in my concerns that are often pushed aside as irrelevant. I definitely look forward to finishing the book and have gladly forfeited my lunch break to do so!

Dr. Frueh is an amazing human being who has helped hundreds of Special Operations Soldiers and Veterans heal both physiologically and psychological from the undeniable impacts of war. I fall into that category - he dedicated three hours a week on the phone for two years to help me. He has dedicated his life, both through help, research, and studies to better understand the unintended effects of combat and treatments to confront them. This book helps arm combat veterans with the impacts they will undoubtedly suffer and provides them with actionable protocols to heal. Great read for both soldiers and their families.
