From the first FDNY chief to respond to the 9/11 attacks, an intimate memoir and a tribute to those who died that others might live

When Chief Joe Pfeifer led his firefighters to investigate an odor of gas in downtown Manhattan on the morning of 9/11, he had no idea that his life was about to change forever. A few moments later, he watched as the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Pfeifer, the closest FDNY chief to the scene, spearheaded rescue efforts on one of the darkest days in American history.

Ordinary Heroes is the unforgettable and intimate account of what Chief Pfeifer witnessed at Ground Zero, on that day and the days that followed. Through his eyes, we see the horror of the attack and the courage of the firefighters who ran into the burning towers to save others. We see him send his own brother up the stairs of the North Tower, never to return. And we walk with him and his fellow firefighters through weeks of rescue efforts and months of numbing grief, as they wrestle with the real meaning of heroism and leadership.

This gripping narrative gives way to resiliency and a determination that permanently reshapes Pfeifer, his fellow firefighters, NYC, and America.
Ordinary Heroes takes us on a journey that turns traumatic memories into hope, so we can make good on our promise to never forget 9/11.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ordinary Heroes is clear-eyed, spellbinding, extraordinary.”—Vanity Fair

"Pfeifer’s record of that day and its aftermath surely enters the canon as one of the necessary documents of 9/11. But it’s his inclusive sense of public service, one that values the heroism of those who do ordinary things in extraordinary times, that makes
Ordinary Heroes a book for today.”The New York Times

“With great humility, Chief Pfeifer has crafted a moving story of how the FDNY was anything but ordinary in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack this country has ever seen. An incredible picture of the resilience, humor, and heart of New York’s bravest.”
—Jon Stewart

“A heartfelt, affecting book that sheds new light on one of the darkest moments in recent history.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“I responded to the World Trade Center attacks along with Chief Joseph Pfeifer. His memoir of that day takes me back to those horrific events in a way no other book about 9/11 has done. A vivid, compelling, and accurate portrayal of the gut-wrenching experiences of the FDNY’s fire chiefs and firefighters that morning, both inside and outside the Twin Towers.”
—Salvatore Cassano, former FDNY fire commissioner and chief of department

“A deeply personal and emotionally charged recollection of unthinkable events. Some people go their whole lives and they’re never really tested. Chief Pfeifer was tested, as were so many that day and he was proven a true hero.”
—Susan Zirinsky, former president, CBS News; senior executive producer, CBS News Content Studio; and co-executive producer, 9/11

“One of my many pleasures of doing interviews for my
NYC Epicenter documentary was meeting my brother FDNY Chief Joe Pfeifer. He is a son of New York City, who rose through the ranks to deal with NYC’s most severe events in his stellar thirty-seven-year career at the FDNY. This book is a living testament to the ‘Bravest,’ to the greatest fire department in the whole world.”—Spike Lee

“A powerful look at an unforgettable event. After experiencing the loss of hundreds of firefighters, Chief Pfeifer became an advocate for change in the first-responder community that inspired interagency collaboration. His book provides a rare look behind the curtain at the everyday heroes and their courage, pain, and perseverance.”
—Cathy L. Lanier, former chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, D.C.

“Joe Pfeifer’s courage, leadership, and team-building skills are beyond reproach, and
Ordinary Heroes is an essential narrative about the importance of those skills in a time of crisis.”—John Abizaid, former commander, U.S. Central Command, and ambassador to Saudi Arabia

As a firefighter and senior officer for over 50yrs, I am still inspired, moved and in awe of the sacrifice made that day to help our "fellow man" when in need.

Quite simply, there aren't enough stars to rate this story with what it deserves... It deserves, at minimum to be required reading for students everywhere, from middle school on up through college. Although as a U.S. citizen, I'm painfully aware of the horrific terrorist attacks of 9-11 and have read a lot on it since that time, there are details in this book that I've never read anywhere.
A FDNY Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer tells us his story of 9-11 and the utter chaos that ensued as people fought to save their own lives and others, in two towering buildings invaded by passenger jetliners, doused in multiple gallons of jet fuel resulting in destruction and devastation all around.
I tried to imagine what it must have been like for Chief Pfeifer who is assigning responding firefighters various jobs to do, when he looks into the face of a fellow firefighter who is younger than him, his beloved brother Kevin. Human instinct is to protect those we love, to give them priority. But Chief Pfeifer had a job to do and so did Kevin who wouldn't have expected any less. So rather than pull him aside and say "Hey bro, can you go be with our parents" or "Can you pick up your niece and nephew for me" or "Don't you have that, ahem, appointment to go have a root canal done for the horrible tooth pain you have" (Wink, wink...), he instead did the job required of him and sent his brother upstairs to fight the inferno with his own crew. Like every single hero that day, Kevin didn't hesitate, he ascended a human being and left this world to spend eternity with His Maker.
This book is very well written and edited. Joseph Pfeifer tells his story as if he is talking to a friend; it's honest, direct and detailed. It covers the attacks, the emotions, the death of Bin Laden and so much more! It is and should be, part of the legacy of Joseph and Kevin Pfeifer, every single person that died that day, those there who survived and every New York City and U.S. citizen. There is no neatly wrapped up "fairytale ending" of "happily ever after." Life is not like that. Instead, hopefully there are lessons learned and greater precautions taken. Hopefully we are truly working towards cooperation, tolerance of differences, less hatred and peace. It seems that is the least we can do!

It is an incredible memoir of a life and a moment that most Americans will never forget. As an American, the September 11th attacks were a watershed moment in our history but as time progresses, it's becoming more of a historical event than contemporary history. It has now been a bit more than 20 years since those terrible events and still the memories and feelings can be raw, more so if they witnessed the event live. The author’s name may not be a household name but anyone who watched footage of the attack saw him as one of the first fire chiefs at the scene, and now he comes forward to tell about his experience with the event and the aftermath.

Ordinary Heroes is a memoir of Joseph Pfeifer, the first fire chief who responded to the World Trade Center attack and best known from the
9/11 documentary  as a witness to the first plane crash into the North Tower. This memoir leans more as an autobiography that alternates in an almost non-chronological story from a few days before September 11th, 2001 to his youth in New York in the 1960s. While most of the content revolves around his experience as a firefighter and his response to the attacks, the author delves into the details before and after the attacks like the grief of losing this brother and rebuilding the organization of the New York Fire Department (NYFD) in the years after 2001.

It is a perspective that has been long in the making and one can a get sense of the author's catharsis. A professional man, the author has kept an inadvertently low profile by throwing himself into his work but after two decades, he provides an account after attacks as fresh as it happened a day ago. He humanizes the members of his department, presenting the 343 firefighters as mortal sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers who took on the risk of injury or death in their job and nowhere was that more apparent than on that terrible day. The author himself develops not just by being elevated in his leadership position quickly, but also by being motivated to learn and grow the NYFD to incorporate an anti-terrorism goal and discussing how the department has changed in the past 20 years.

It seems now that unless you were personally affected, September 11th passes uneventfully but as a person who enjoys history, the author’s story and perspective on the attacks is an account I could not ignore. I have lived on the West Coast my whole life and like countless Americans, I watched the events unfold on television live and admittedly, whenever September 11th rolls around, the most I ever do is take a moment or two to think about that day’s events and maybe watch a documentary on the events and subsequent aftermath. Reading about it - and from a person like him - is a story that people with interests in that particular day or with a general interest in American history can both learn from. I have read this on both e-reader and Kindle - because this book contains color images from the author’s personal life, the presentation is best on the Kindle Fire series of tablets and acceptable on e-ink readers.

I had the good fortune of meeting Chief Pfeifer when he came to the Kennedy School at Harvard to study. (I have spent 38 years in the fire service).

Joe Pfeifer is a special person, a consummate gentleman, and a fierce leader of the men and women under his command, both in times of crisis and those of routine firehouse responsibilities.

This book introduces the reader to the life of a firefighter, on the front lines as well as the firehouse routines, that help nurture and develop men and women into the greatest job going.

His easy to read writing style brings the reader into the back seat of Battalion One as he witnesses and responds to the greatest challenge the fire service has ever encountered. The reader can feel themselves in the lobby, at the Fire Command Center as crucial decisions are made and orders are given and obeyed without reservation.

As tragic a day was for the FDNY on September 11, 2001, it was also a day when the department stood tall and effected the greatest high-rise rescue operation in the history of the fire service. That fact is often lost on many people.

Chief Pfeifer takes us beyond September 11th, through the grieving process as he lost his own brother, Lt. Kevin Pfeifer that day. A supreme sacrifice that no doubt weighed heavily on him as he gave an order to his brother to take his company up into the compromised tower to save lives.

This book is highly recommended reading for many, but I think in particular a lot of our young people, high-schoolers would benefit from reading this book to realize the traits of sacrifice and dedication are critically important and perhaps needed more than ever today!

I cannot recommend this book enough. This memoir strikes the balance between giving the raw facts but at the same time reflecting on them. It is honest without being insensitive. I read it via kindle which made it even harder for me to put it down! Anyone who has ever gone through suffering will relate to what Pfeifer experienced. I would give six stars if it were possible.

I hope I will go to the 9/11 memorial one day.
