As the U. S. S. Titan ventures beyond the outermost reaches of known space, the telepaths in her crew—including Diplomatic Officer Donna Troi—are overwhelmed by an alien cry of distress, leading the ship to the scene of a shocking act of carnage: a civilazation of insterstellar “whalers” preying upon and exploiting a familiar species of sentient spacebource giants.

Appalled but reluctant to rush to judgement, Captain William Riker and his crew in investigate, discovering a cosmic spawning ground in a region of active star formation—the exosystem for a bewildering array of diverse but similarly vast life-forms. While attempting to negotiate an end to the victimizeation of these creatures, Riker’s crew inadvertently grants them the means to defeat their hunters’ purpose…only to learn that things are not exactly as they seem.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This book is a 5 star; I don't know why someone would give it a 1 star.

Titan Book Three is a terrific completion to the three part series depicting Captain Riker's first missions. The characters are well thought out and this book further defines all characters. This book is much better than Book Two in that you learn more about the characters. This book is very upbeat and well-worth reading; much more reminiscent of what made Star Trek so great. This book is well worth reading.

I hope that the Star Trek franchise will produce more Titan books and possibly a movie or series with Titan. These books are really terrific and so reminiscent of the plots that made Star Trek so great!

Great addition to the Titan series. Interesting look at the abilities and vulnerabilities of telepaths. An encounter with old allies and foes, plus new species, garners broadening perspectives for all involved. I enjoyed the take on this particular sector of the Universe and the creatures in it. Predictable in Star Trek fashion, yet surprising and fun outcome as well. True Star Trek material!

Orion's Hounds is the third book in the Star Trek: Titan series. Focusing on the adventures of Captain William T. Riker (from Star Trek: The Next Generation) as he commands the starship USS Titan on an exploration out in uncharted space. This story is set in the year 2380, a few months after the movie Star Trek: Nemesis.

Orion's Hounds plotline takes the recurring concept of "cosmozoans", large space going creatures (some intelligent others more instinctive), and expands on it by delving into the ecosystem that these creatures comprise. Along the way we meet out antagonists, a group of nomadic space hunters who prey on these massive beasts. The bulk of the story is spent on Riker as he tries to find a way to let the two sides co-exist on a more peaceful level.

Through the course of the book Riker pretty much ignores Starfleet's Prime Directive, a policy to avoid becoming involved in the affairs of outside powers. This decision comes across as somewhat out of character, as the cast of The Next Generation were known for their almost dogmatic interpretation of that policy, to the point that they would willfully watch the extinction of entire species rather than become involved in helping them. However in this story it seems Riker has had a change of heart on the matter and chooses to jump in and try to intervene and negotiate on behalf of the intelligent cosmozoans.

The story plays out at a slow deliberate pace, taking time to details the interactions of the various space whales and other beasties. However the plot meanders back and forth as it shows the merits of each party before finally reaching its rather unorthodox solution. Overall while entertaining the story feels longer than necessary, spending to much time of cameos of the various space beasts that have appeared in the shows.

The story also spends to much time dwelling on the mating habits of the crew and the aliens they meet, a topic that Star Trek writers seem to obsess over far to frequently. The book however does raise concern over how the character Diana Troi's role as usual damsel in distress has taken a psychological toll on her. Sadly this is another bad trend that Star Trek has, preaching the positives of feminism and then turning around and using women as sex objects.

Overall this isn't a bad book, but it isn't the most compelling read out there either.

This was a truly creative and interesting book with great writing. Highly innovative ideas and very inventive. I especially love the officer who was from that world where all living beings are interconnected through an instinctive bond -- the gestalt. I don't know if I'd ever want to see this be made into a movie, but I do recommend this!

This was quite an excellent Star Trek novel; the plot moved well, with some good action, some good suspense, and a good, plausible resolution that was realistic enough to not be a perfect, everybody's-happy-with-it solution. The characters were handled well, with the Starfleet characters demonstrating a good balance between trying to avoid interfering in the development of other cultures and trying to save innocent lives; the opposition were decent folks with a different culture and a different approach to life, rather than being cardboard villains, and even within their group, there was variation in personality and opinion. All in all, one of the best Star Trek books I've read in a while.

ok so, the plot is just... bonkers. No spoilers. I liked it - but I am a fan of silly things. Author is decent, characterizations and pace seemed relatively smooth. I am enjoying the Titan series; do note that it is non-canon though. I was glad about that part because I am also watching the CBS series Picard, and they do not interact in spoiler-ing ways.

A really enjoyable book. I think the crew interactions are superbly written and knowing "The Riker's" so well from TNG makes reading this book, and the first two a pleasure. There are references to old TNG episodes in this book and also some references to books brought out prior to the Titan series. Not knowing the books at all I was pleased to find that the references were not needed for the plot of the book and enough was given in the text to allow you to follow them without having an in depth knowledge of the books they refer to.

I hope that in future books, (I know there a number after this but I am playing catch up being a newcomer to this series), there is a lot more of our favourite nurse, Alyssa and the new CMO Dr Ree. I would recommend starting with the first book in the series and reading them in order. The first two books follow directly on after one another and this third one is set only about two to three weeks after the end of the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Riker and the Balance of Force
Reviewed in Germany on December 20, 2006

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good, but not finished reading yet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2013
at time of mithering review, i haven't finished reading it, but its good so far, and some nice touches, an example is " only Soval could go to Andoria", mentioned by Troi to Tuvok (i think). A nice echo of Spocks diatribe in ST6: " only Nixon could go to China".
Anyway, ... its good reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entschädigt für die ersten zwei Teile
Reviewed in Germany on June 17, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Titan lives up to its promise
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2013
This is the third Titan book and the series finally hits its stride. The crew are exploring the Gum galaxy when Troi picks up some empathic chatter. It turns out to be coming from a group of space creatures being hunted as part of a great hunt. Of course, Titan rushes in to protect the innocent but it turns out things aren't as straightforward as they seem.

The real stars of this book are the cosmozoans, a whole menagerie of weird and wonderful creatures living in the depths of space. The species are varied but fully realised, it's easy to believe these creatures could exist. A couple of old friends from TNG turn up, the Farpoint aliens and the crystalline entity, and get a bit more background than their previous 'alien of the week' roles allowed.

By the time I reached the end, I still wanted to know, more about this incredible ecosystem and quite frankly I could happily read two or three more novels set in this area of space.
