In 1857, the medieval walls of Vienna were razed to make way for the Ringstrasse, a bustling thoroughfare now lined with opulent homes, prestigious schools, and world-famous cultural institutions. With the construction of the Ringstrasse also came a flourish of artistic innovation, at the vanguard of which was Gustav Klimt and his Künstler-Compagnie collective.

A new exhibition currently on view at Vienna’s Belvedere Museum celebrates the artistic achievements of Klimt and other painters of the Ringstrasse period, as well as the wealthy collectors who patronized their art. Titled “Klimt and the Ringstrasse: A Showcase of Grandeur,” the show includes works from the famed Bloch-Bauer family collection, as well as objects owned by noted aficionados Nikolaus Dumba and Friedrich von Leitenberger.

This presentation coincides with the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Ringstrasse.
