The Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt holds a collection of approximately 1400 paintings from the thirteenth to twentieth century. Pieter Brueghel the Elder is represented in the Darmstadt Gallery with his famous late work The Magpie on the Gallows (1568), which he had left to his wife. An important highlight of the baroque gallery are the high-quality Flemish paintings. History, landscape, and architectural painting from Antwerp, a tradition that was continued in the northern Netherlands of the seventeenth century with works by Sebastian Vrancx, Paul Vredeman de Vries or Bartholomeus van Bassen, as well as Flemish cabinet pieces (by Gonzales Coques) and large showpieces like Diana Returning from the Hunt, painted around 1623 by Peter Paul Rubens and Frans Snyders. The Amsterdam Rembrandt School and Haarlem School are particularly well represented amidst the Dutch Masterpieces of the seventeenth century, with paintings such as Dirck Dircksz. Santvoort’s Portrait of a boy (1644) or the shoreline view At the Beach, painted in Haarlem around 1623 by Jan Porcellis. In 2021 the collection catalogue of paintings from 1550-1700 (edited by Dr. Heidrun Ludwig) will be published.
