Getafe will change stadium name Image: Getafe FC

The LaLiga team Getafe CF (Spain) is set to change the name of their stadium – Coliseum Alfonso Pérez – after the President of the club Ángel Torres Sánchez signed a lease agreement with the Council of Getafe.

‘YARDBARKER’ stated that the Getafe CF residence – the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez – was named after the former Real Madrid and FC Barcelona player in 1998 – Alfonso Pérez Muñoz – by popular vote of the fans.

Alfonso Pérez Muñoz, known simply as Alfonso, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a striker. Having represented both the top-flight clubs of Spain – Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona – during his career, Muñoz possessed above-average heading ability despite not reaching 180 cm.

Born in Getafe, Muñoz also played 38 times for Spain and was considered the most famous son of the town. At that point, he was still active and he only retired in 2005, although he never donned the shirt of ‘Los Azulones’.

Getafe Club de Fútbol, or simply Getafe, is a professional football club based in Getafe, a City in the Community of Madrid, Spain. The team competes in LaLiga, the highest tier of the Spanish football system. The club’s home stadium is Coliseum Alfonso Pérez which was opened in 1998 and can hold 17,393 spectators.

The 17,393-capacity Coliseum Alfonso Pérez is a municipality-owned football stadium in Getafe, Spain. It is the home ground of Getafe CF.

‘YARDBARKER’ further stated that however, Sánchez and Muñoz have never enjoyed a good relationship. The former has frequently complained that Muñoz is never to be seen at the stadium that bears his name.

Recently, the Getafe CF signed an agreement with the local Council to lease the stadium for the next 40 years exclusively, with the opportunity to extend that agreement for a further 10 years.

In that contract, it gave Sánchez a number of permissions, including the ability to rename the stadium so long as it includes Coliseum. It is expected that Sánchez will seek out a sponsorship agreement to replace Muñoz’s name.

In addition, Getafe will likely look to improve the infrastructure of the stadium against the backdrop of the private equity and investment advisory firm CVC deal and the stadium agreement. That will include covering all four stands with a roof, with plans being put in place potentially as soon as next year.

LaLiga has agreed in principle to a “multipronged” deal with the Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) including the 2.7 billion euros infusion in return for 10 percent of its revenue, as well as the creation of a newly formed company housing a range of commercial activities in which CVC would also take a 10 percent stake.
