The first couple of rows are worked flat, then the work is closed to the round with some extra stitches called ‘steek’. After the center piece is done, the steek needs to be secured with a sewing machine and can then be cut open. This is not a complicated process, so you don’t have to be afraid of it. A big advantage of working this way is that you don’t need to weave away a lot of ends.

In the end new stitches are cast on along the sides of the shawl for the border. This part is worked in rounds with three pairs of needles in total. The edge will be folded and then sewn.
