Going with the flow: Style meets every need
Calibu Vineyard
[Las Vegas] Technology and design came together in a big way here at Surfaces 2022 creating a style spectrum from bold and bright to soft and subtle. From traditionalism to more contemporary and mid-century modern, suppliers brought dynamic hard and soft surface offerings to market — everything from animal prints for carpet to smoked, staining and cerusing effects for hard surface. And, there continued to be an emphasis placed on organic movement and natural materials as consumers look to bring the outdoors inside. Explained Mannington’s vice president of residential styling Terry Marchetta, “Trends are moving out of the pandemic mindset and there’s a reconnection with the outside.”

Animal Aesthetics

Even in today’s apparel, animal prints are a key fashion trend. Jamie Welborn, Mohawk’s vice president of residential carpet product development, shared that carpet too is seeing animal-inspired visuals.

And, added Mohawk’s vice president of marketing Denise Silbert, tone- on-tone patterns are also popular. “People are getting more adventurous. We’ve seen pattern sales increase over the past two years,” she explained.

High-end Herringbone

Patterns, particularly herringbone, continue to come on strong, particularly in weathered looks. And more than hardwood, herringbone is showing up as a trending visual for tile as well.

Design Destination

One of the important trends demonstrated at Mannington’s booth is what Marchetta describes as Destination Locale. “It’s about escapism, creating scenery and bridging the gap between indoors and outdoors with materials influenced by nature and enhanced with technology,” she said. “Every product category is about beauty and performance.”

Mid-Century Modern

Paige Nichols, product director at Mohawk, said there are clear trends emerging that are playing out in new hard surface styles — Mid-Century Modern is an important one.

And with all of its natural character, hardwood and hardwood visuals are well-suited to meet the design aesthetics of this trend.

Retro Chic

The nod to nostalgia and traditionalism is evident in new hard surface intros. A hexagon pattern is available for customers wanting a more maximalism aesthetic. “It has a retro feel,” Marchetta said. “Consumers want patterns and decorative accents in the home. We’re seeing rounded furniture and rounded accents trending.

Creative Concepts with Calibu Vineyard

Design and innovation meet at the Calibu Vineyard show home.

“Calibu Vineyard is a new way of creating a showroom experience,” explained interior designer Jennifer Farrell. “We took an abandoned estate in the Malibu Hills and are transforming it into a Montauk-inspired estate.” Spanning 3.5 acres, the 7,200 square foot home boasts 19 rooms and a working vineyard with an anticipated completion of late summer/early fall 2022. Featured in the home includes Ferguson appliances, Lamps Plus lighting, Emser Tile, Mohawk hardwood and Karastan rugs.

“We wanted to show livable luxury while respecting the architecture and the home’s original bones while refreshing it in a modern way but retaining the nods of traditionalism still there,” Farrell explained. “The Montauk inspiration came from romance experienced in the Hamptons while also balancing accessible luxury with traditionalism. There needs to be the connection to the big move in design which is towards comfort and a family-feel. We want to show this version of contemporary with tradition and a lot of tradition comes from the East Coast.”
