‘NBA 2K20’ Introduces New What-If, New Year’s Resolution Cards To MyTeam

This article is more than 4 years old.

Ever wonder what kind of player DeMar DeRozan would be if he were a more deadly three-point shooter? Perhaps you’ve pondered, as I have, what impact DeAndre Jordan would make if he was a good-to-great free-throw shooter.

2K has taken this step with DeRozan and Jordan and pushed it to their MyTeam mode with the new Evolution-heavy, New Year’s Resolution cards. All of the cards focus on noteworthy NBA players from the past and present and each gives you an opportunity to evolve the card to a level that eliminates each player’s greatest weakness.

The DeRozan card begins as a 95-rated Diamond, but evos up to a 96-rated Pink Diamond once his outside shooting attributes are bumped up. Jordan begins as an 89-rated Ruby and evos up to a 92-rated Amethyst once you’ve hit the requirements to improve his free-throw shooting.

The DeRozan and Jordan cards are actually two of the lesser gems in the set. A 96 PD Bob Pettit adds athleticism when it is evolved and becomes a 97 PD. A 96 PD Gilbert Arenas move up a point with improved defense once it is evolved.

There are 12 cards in the set. If you collect them all, the prize is a nice one. You receive a 97 PD Bill Russell card who rises to a 98 with three-point shooting after the evolve. That’s just unfair.

Here is a look at the list from NBA 2K on Facebook:

If you’re wondering about some of the evo requirements for these cards, NBA 2K20 dev Rytis Gineika aka R4zor shared some screenshots:

I’m not a fan of an excess of overpowered cards, but this set doesn’t bother me. The mode is based on fantasy, and thus the evolution concept is permissible.

However, I’m hoping we don’t see the mode flooded with tons of meaningless Galaxy Opal cards during the spring as we saw in last year’s game.

So far, I’ve opened three single packs using MT (17,250 MT per pack for deluxe, which guarantees one NYR card, and 10,000 MT for the non-guaranteed pack), and all I’ve gotten is three Ruby Shaun Livingston cards; so the jury is still out on how live the packs are in general.

I’m not going to spend any cash on these packs for the time being. We’ll see how many of the best cards from the set are in circulation over the next few days.

The set will be available for one week.
