Cult of the Lamb
Well, there’s a headline I never thought I’d be writing. As a response to joke tweets about the upcoming “Sins of the Flesh” update, Cult of the Lamb announced it would add cartoon sex to the game in some capacity if it hit 300,000 followers on Twitter before the end of the year, about 10,000 additional ones.
Instead, it got 100,000 new followers in a single day.
Originally, developer Massive Monster was brushing off the sex jokes, saying “Don't worry, the 'sex update' is more of a meme in the community” and “"The age rating hopefully won't change after this update, as we made sure content adheres to guidelines. Obviously everyone is different but I doubt you won't be able to play in front of your kids if you do already!"
Cult of the Lamb is currently rated Teen. It’s cute cartoon animals, but they do things like sacrifice each other to demented gods, so that alone is going to lose that E for Everyone tag. It isn’t clear what Sins of the Flesh actually adds (there are already leaf-clad cult disciples dancing around a fire), but now there’s a promised sex addition. The expansion is out in early 2024, so there may be time yet to add something like that in.
Of course this is still just going to be a meme. They are not going to put in graphic cartoon sex into their Teen rated game to flip it to Mature or the blacklisted Adults Only rating. It’s probably like, two animals go in a little house, there are hearts that pop up over the house, then they emerge blushing with some sort of buff. Maybe they produce a baby cult member eventually. See, they added sex? Anyway, it’s going to be something like that.
It’s just a funny story and shows the power of I guess uh, sex, but also good social media campaigns building on memes for more attention. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a video game account like that get so many followers in a single day unless it was like, the just-formed account of an anticipated new game. Certainly not a Twitter account that’s two years old.
We will have to sit and await updates on the…sex update. Don’t get your hopes up, if your hopes involve something disturbingly naughty, but it’s been a fun few days here and watching them play along has been really funny. So, good work everyone.
