Schloss Drachenburg Castle – A Perfect Spot To Spend The Day

Schloss Drachenburg Castle – A Perfect Spot To Spend The Day

Okay, I will be the first to admit that the title is super confusing. Saying Schloss Drachenburg castle is a lot like saying ‘Castle Drachenburg Castle’ because in German Schloss means castle.

I had to put it out there because a lot of people (me included) are tourists and don’t always get the names of most of the places right especially when we visit the first time round.

So yes… If you are visiting make sure that you say either ‘Drachenburg castle’ or ‘Schloss Drachenburg’ otherwise people will give you odd looks. Kinda like the ones you get when you say chai tea when catching street food in India

But I digress! Drachenburg castle is one of the prettiest places that I have visited in Germany and in a short span of time we have visited quite a lot. We spent Easter Monday here so we even got to participate in some of the Easter activities which the children absolutely loved.

For us, this was part of our trip to Frankfurt. It was a great stop on our way back to Groningen. It is also a great trip if you are in the Bonn – Cologne area.

In a rush and wondering where to stay when visiting Drachenburg Castle. I recommend Storyhotel Bergischer Hof Königswinter which is just under a kilometer away and is a great budget spot! 🏨

Location Of Drachenburg Castle

Address: Drachenfelsstraße 118, 53639 Koenigswinter, Germany

Schloss Drachenburg is located 13 km away from Bonn and 53 km away from Cologne. It however is pretty close to the main highway which makes it a great stop if you are traveling around that area. Like I mentioned before, we included this castle as a part of our road trip from Groningen to Frankfurt and the Rhine valley.

Timings Of Drachenburg Castle

Schloss Drachenburg is open every day of the week like clockwork. You can enter the campus anytime between 11am to 6pm.

This worked so well for us because we planned to visit it as a midday stop! Make sure you drop a pin on the location if you want to do something similar.

The tickets to Schloss Drachenburg are available on site. The ticket costs 8 euros per adult. Our kids entered for free.

Drachenburg Castle

I think the first impression that I had of Schloss Drachenburg was WOW!

I think the first impression that I had of Schloss Drachenburg was WOW!

Then I noticed the little train that ferries people to and fro and I got distracted. Hahaha… The train is extremely cute and it has its own little station which means it’s extremely convenient for everyone to reach the castle.

The ticket counter is right next to the castle and you can easily catch a ticket before entering. The day we visited, we literally breezed right through and it was a holiday mind you.

Accessibility In Drachenburg Castle

There were paved paths to Schloss Drachenburg!

There were paved paths to Schloss Drachenburg!

For most part Schloss Drachenburg castle is pretty accessible. They have signs that say if you have a wheelchair, ask for assistance. They even had a parking area for the strollers which is what we did with ours.

I don’t know how people manage with wheelchairs to be honest because I did not see any elevators. There were steps as expected and since we didn’t have to worry about the stroller we were not encumbered by anything.

The Interiors Of Schloss Drachenburg

There are two main floors that you cover when you visit the Drachenburg castle. These show you what it was to live like a royal. You can catch a glimpse of the royal bedrooms.

I particularly didn’t like the rug. I honestly don’t know why I’m mentioning it but it just seemed to capture my attention instantly. Sigh. It was a bear skin and really upset the kids but I guess that’s what it was back then and I need to get used to answering these questions.

music in Schloss Drachenburg

Totally went off topic there. There are loads of different rooms. Make sure to stop and peak out some of the windows. The views are breathtaking.

One of the rooms had a grand piano which was being played. I’m not sure whether this occurs regularly though. It was one of the most mesmerizing performances that I have ever seen.

Spontaneously a lady with the voice of an angel joined in. She was just visiting but it really made the experience even more memorable.

If you do visit and have a moment. Pause here just to listen to the acoustics of the room.

Gardens Of Schloss Drachenburg

The gorgeous gardens of Schloss Drachenburg!

The gorgeous gardens of Schloss Drachenburg!

One of the best parts about Schloss Drachenburg is the gardens that surround it. Not only do you get an amazing view of the castle itself, you also get a view of the countryside around.

The gardens are pretty and well manicured. If the weather is good, they are a great place to let the kids run around while you chill. You could even have a picnic lunch here.

Restaurants In And Around Drachenburg Castle

Drachenburg castle has a lot of great places to catch a bite to eat when you visit. That’s one of the things that I love about Germany. No matter which place we visited, there were both budget and fine dining options.

Felders am Winzerhäuschen

We did not visit this restaurant but it is one of the popular places to eat. Felders am Winzerhäuschen has a view of the Rhine valley which is pretty nice. So if you want to sit back and have a nice meal with an exceptional view. This is the place to be.

Don’t forget to pair it with one of the numerous different types of wine from the area. While the items on the menu are a bit more expensive than the other restaurant, I will say that everyone says that their portions are great! So it really is value for money.

Am Drachenbrunnen

Am Drachenbrunnen

Am Drachenbrunnen was a more budget option. This may not have a view of the valley but it does have a view of the Drachenburg castle.

This restaurant has all the basics of German food covered. You can have schnitzel, fries or Brötchen with a wurst aka bread with one of the German sausages. I had the latter and I must say both the sausage and the bread were delicious!

The restaurant also has booster seats for younger children which helps if you are travelling with toddlers.

Gaststätte “Luigi Ponzetta”

If you want to eat a place that is uber special then try Gaststätte “Luigi Ponzetta”. This is located in the Schloss Drachenburg itself and has an epic view especially if you want to sit outdoors in good weather.

I did not know that this restaurant existed or I would have definitely not eaten as much as I did in Am Drachenbrunnen.

The most popular dish here is the Flammkuchen. This is a flat pizza kind of dish but it tastes way different. The crust is extremely thin and instead of tomato sauce they use creme fraiche. It comes with a variety of toppings. We initially tasted this when we visited Maine in Germany and it has fast become my favorite German dish!
