Oblex Spellminds

Oblex spellminds are a special variant of oblex that possess a special hunger for magical energy. Although these oozes can feed off the magical energy found in artifacts and magical items, their favorite source of food comes from the magical energy residing in living creatures, especially spellcasters.

Arcane Devourers

Oblex spellminds have the special ability to siphon the magical energy from their victims. They have a natural sensitivity to magic and can sense the smallest glimmer of raw magical energy from a mile away. These oozes not only use this energy as a means of sustenance but can also be used as a means to heal their wounds as well as acquire the arcane knowledge from their foes.

Spell Thieves

Although all oblexes are proficient spellcasters, none match the potential that a spellmind ooze has thanks to its ability to redirect and even steal new spells. Not only are oblex spellminds able to replicate the spells of their enemies, but they are also able to borrow the magical essence from their victims, using that residual energy to fuel the ooze's own spellcasting capabilities.

Spell Mind Tactics

Because of arcane potential, spellmind oblexes are considered to be the most dangerous of all their kind due to their unpredictable nature. Thankfully, these oozes tend to be quite predictable despite their intelligence as they are particularly drawn towards large concentrations of magic or powerful spellcasters. However battling the oblex can prove to be quite troublesome thanks to its ability to cast spells through their simulacra.

Mana Siphons

When the oblex attacks a target, it's primary goal is to hinder its ability to cast spells to prevent their prey from escaping before ripping out a creature's arcane essence. If its target manages to resist its nullifying abilities, the ooze has several arcane countermeasures at its disposal to immediately dispel any magical effects while using the residual energy to heal itself.

Magical Nullifiers

Despite their spellcasting prowess, oblexes are quite conservative in their spellcasting abilities only using them to lure prey, eliminating large groups of enemies, or making a quick escape. Outside of these circumstances, oblexes rarely need to casts spells as their primary targets typically are spellcasters and the ooze’s natural abilities tend to be far more effective to against their favored prey than most spells.

Magic Sense The oblex can pinpoint the location of a spell or magical effect within 120ft. of it. It can also determine if a creature is a spellcaster or not

Evasion When the oblex fails a Dexterity saving throw against an effect that deals damage, the oblex takes half damage and none on a success.

Linked Simulacra The oblex has a number of reactions on each round equal to the number of active simulacra it has.

Magical Attacks The oblex's attacks are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance.

Spellbreaker Creatures have disadvantage on saving throws to maintain concentration from taking damage from the oblex.

Spell Eater The oblex has advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects. On a successful saving throw, the oblex takes no damage but regains 5 hitpoints for each level of the spell cast(minimum of 1).

Spider Climb The oblex can climb difficult surfaces, including ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Innate Spellcasting

The oblex's innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 15). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no components:

At Will Detect Magic, Identify, Detect Thoughts, Charm Person (5th Level), Hold Person (3rd level)

3/day each Counterspell, Dispel Magic, Vitreolic Sphere

Actions

Multiattack. The oblex can make two attacks with its pseudopods

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, 10ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) acid damage. If the target is concentrating on a spell effect, it takes an additional 11(2d10) force damage

Consume Arcana One creature within 5ft. of the oblex must succeed a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failed saving throw, the target has its takes 1d10 force damage times the level of the target's highest available spell slot (minimum of 1) and that creature loses that spell slot.

Absorption The oblex can use its action consume a dead creature or a creature it can see within 0 hitpoints. Upon using this feature, the oblex gains 30 hitpoints, gains all the target's proficiencies and can cast their spells. Spells learned in this manner can be cast once per day without requiring spell components.

Destroy Simulacrum The oblex can choose to detonate one of its active Simulacrum. All creatures within 10ft. of the simulacrum must succeed a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failed saving throw, creatures take 17(3d10) force damage and cannot cast spells until the end of its next turn. On a successful saving throw, creatures take half damage and are otherwise unaffected

Bonus Actions

Arcane Impersonator As a bonus action, the oblex can extrude a piece of itself that assumes the appearance of one Medium or smaller creature whose memories it has stolen. This simulacrum appears, feels, and sounds exactly like the living version of the creature it impersonates, though it smells faintly of like ozone. The oblex can impersonate 1d4 + 1 different creatures, each one tethered to its body by a strand of slime that can extend up to 120 feet away. For all practical purposes, the simulacrum is the oblex, meaning that the oblex occupies its space and the simulacrum's space simultaneously. Whenever the oblex moves on its turn, its simulacrum can move the same distance in a direction of the oblex's choice while within range. The slimy tether is immune to damage, but it is severed if there is no opening at least 1 inch wide between the oblex's main body and the simulacrum. The simulacrum disappears if the tether is severed.

Reactions

Absorbing Counter When the oblex successfully uses Counterspell or Dispel Magic, it can benefit from its Spell Eater trait.

Gelatinous Evasion When the oblex takes damage, it can use its reaction to take half damage instead.
