First book is the best, most detailed. By the time the author gets to the third book, there are too many characters. And with that many characters, the author can only dedicate limited time to each, some are well developed, some feel meaningless. Cultural Revolution is nobody’s favorite period of time, that’s another reason the third book is my least favorite.

The books provoked me to think, about personality, about love, about life. And that’s enough.
